Best way to clean a display?

I have an ASUS MX279H monitor, and it has a bunch of smudges and such on it...

I used a microfiber cloth before, but didn't clean it completely.

 

How can I get the marks off?

I think something like windex is fine, but I'm not sure

when I cleaned mine, I used a damp cloth, which probably isn't recommended, but worked fine

Please OP don't use windex. Just use water. Windex can eat through coatings on a display. It is fine for glass displays but others is a no go

Glasses cleaner and a lint free cloth lens close is what I've always found to be best. The solution still cleans the grime off the screen without it damaging anything on the panel, yet still has enough of a mix of alcohol to evaporate and keep streaks off the screen. 

 

Wipe once with a gentle swirly motion, then again in horizontal swipes. Helps keep all the streaks off the screen, and if they are a couple them all being in one direction helps trick the key into not seeing them

Would water damage the monitor? I wouldn't use much.

Also, should I use paper towel or maybe a rag?

As everyone else has said, water is fine and a good option, paper towel can just leave lint on the screen if its shit stuff.
