Linus's video on the self driving BMW

babadoctor

So, if you watch the video you can see that the BMW had some sort of indicator that told you how much time was left on a street light. How does this work? Is there an existing program or website than can do this?

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

It's real time prediction.See if a car drove past that red light a hour ago and records the time then your car will know too

yea,  I topped up on my blinker fluid this morning, was running low recently ;).

IT uses data from the city, and predictive data to tell you.

It's similar to how google can predict traffic patterns. It just knows how long the average driver spends at the red light and give you an estimation of how much time is left.

I'd rather NOT know, just because knowing how many seconds are left would probably drive me nuts and let me put my guard down while I wait.

Data from the city? What do you mean by that?

Can you elaborate?

Where does this data come from exactly?

For example audi does it this way

http://blog.caranddriver.com/audi-now-tells-drivers-when-traffic-lights-will-turn-green/

The German car brand launched the new feature earlier this month in Las Vegas. It counts down the time remaining until traffic lights turn green. Displayed on both the instrument cluster and the head-up display, the countdown clock provides real-time wait predictions for drivers interested in remaining attentive behind the wheel. So far, the feature has very limited distribution. Currently, it only works at traffic lights in southern Nevada and is limited to subscribers to the Audi Connect Prime service, which costs $199 for six months’ worth of access to dozens of connected features.

BMW will do it the same , and i believe both will also have predictive data where they see how long cars are at a light and determine it via that away.

The data comes from a mesh network of all the cars, something that was mentioned repeatedly in the video. The cars are constantly collecting their own data and using that to make themselves, along with the other cars on the network "smarter" in a way.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2
