What do you guys think of asylum seekers (or as tony abbot now call's them illegal boat people). What is your opinion of them. And what do you think can be done about them. My personal opinion is that if their life was at risk in your own country yes we should let you in and give you asylum.

I like helping out as many people as i can. My family and millions of others were refugees during the Armenian Genocide. I think we should help everyone we can as long as we can provide for ourselves in doing so.

As for "illegal immigrants" or boat people, they are just looking for a better life. I know some people who had illegal immigrant parents (before their parent's married here and became citizens) and their parents are some of the nicest, hard working people I have ever met. Just put yourselves in other's shoes and don't be quick to judge.

I could say something about Australian's right now, but I won't. Anyways, The government should help these people who have witnessed terrible acts of government, etc. that made them leave the country.

Yesss

As for the OP, personally I think the way it's being handled is wrong and gives the wrong impression of Australia. All it's doing is chewing up more of our budget which Phony Rabbit is so determined to protect. Whatever happened to empathy?

There are two sides here:

1) If you grant everyone asylum, then you end up with a huge population of unemployed, impoverished and homeless people, we don't have enough public housing. Also, there are people who legitimately wait their turn and follow the proper channel to enter Australia, it's inequitable for them. If the govt. was to sink more funds in to public welfare instead of garbage like desal plants, pointless road tunnels and Myki.

2) IF you turn people away, often you're sending them to a warzone, which is scary to think of. It's a tough catch-22 and I guess all governments since Howard have been trying to balance it.

Me personally, I'm all for higher intakes of refugees and more public welfare. My $0.02

media makes it more of an issue then it is, its a grey area there are people that needs asylum - some just do it for money.

I think if there's conditions if immigrants will work in Australian agriculture who is screaming for worker's I dont see a problem - maybe say they gotta do 5 years in agriculture while there bridging visa is done.

all i can say is this topic raised countless times in the context of racial hatred

edit: if the Australian goverment didnt slash foreign aid, I could understand tightening border security - but border security needs to be reduced as its costing fuck loads

Its all about those volumetric clouds

It is a very complicated issue. There are a few cold hard facts that people keep forgetting when this issue is raised.

1. It cost's about $10,000 to get to Australia by boat. so these people are not financial refugees.

2. majority of them come through Indonesia, However their credentials are somehow lost between the time they leave Indonesia and arrive here. So clearly they have something to hide.

3. some of them elect to return to Iran straight away when offered a temporary visa, this is not the action of someone desperate to get away from trouble.

4. It is not Illegal to ask for asylum, It is however Illegal to enter Australia without a current Visa. Which means they are breaking the law whether we like it or not.

Lobby groups and bleeding hearts clubs make the real issues so much harder to deal with because they obfuscate the truth and with that it is harder to do the right thing by both asylum seekers and the Australian public because they'll get a backlash from misinformed people.

Just a minor example of what can happen when the cultural balance of a nation shifts.

Read of it what you will but the fact that it even happened is the issue I worry about most.

Quite frankly anyone who is not of indigenous decent is from an immigrant family anyway so the should have no right to exclude people from coming here.

[sarcastic joke=poor taste]But that only applies to white Europeans.  [/sarcastic joke]
