What do you use to job search?

The Last MeMe

I am currently employed with Best Buy. I love Best Buy as a company and initially I LOVED working for them, I even was a Consultant Agent for Geek Squad for about two months. Long story short I had to transfer stores at the end of the summer (for school) and the management team at my new store has completely ruined my experience. Although I will be going back home soon and will probably seek back out another Geek Squad position at my old store, I need to find something locally to do until then. I have checked craigslist and indeed.com for positions and there really just is not many jobs to be had that are even somewhat related to my field of study (Information Systems at Kansas State University). Where do you guys look for jobs at? Any other suggestions of where I should job hunt?

Check to see if your city or state has a government run job board. Also check all the major online job boards like Monster and Workopolis. If you don't, create a linkedin profile and check their job boards too.

Furthermore, if you have any technical credentials, see if your city has an office for any temporary job placement agencies.

And furthermore, if you're looking for the "best buy" or other retail style of jobs, nothing beats door to door resumes. Print out 50 resumes, and drop them off at every single retail store or business you'd like to work. Make sure to ask for the manager and hand in the resume personally (unless the establishment does online only). If the manager isn't there, find out when they will be in next, hand in a resume anyway, and come back and personally hand one in to the manager at that time.

Pretty much what I tried until I got my first job at McDonald's, there was a grocery store opening up near me so I decided to apply and see if I'd get hired or not if I did, I would leave McDonald's because I think working there was kinda gross (particularly cooking the food which was my job there). Which they did hire me at the end of October, and so I left McDonald's on about the 13th of November and started at my current employer about a week later. (My store opened in early December).

But yeah, I agree applying to a lot of places often helps. That's how I got my first job, though that's not how I got my second job.

The other thing I can recommend to those on a job search is be persistent. After applying to all available places, and if you do not receive a phone call, re-apply a month or so later. Especially if they are still advertising an opening.

It's possible some of the places I first applied to, wanted me to call them and inquire about my application.

I just felt like it was being desperate.

Being retired, I check the various hunting and fishing lodge sites. :P

after applying to a job, you should ALWAYS follow up within 2-3 weeks with them. A simple call to the HR manager saying:

Hi, my name is "wcreek" and I submitted my application/resume on <insert date here>. I was wondering if you had a chance to review my application?

It's not desperate. It's making them know you want the position, and you're willing to chase it.

Yeah. When I'm looking for a job next time that's probably how I'll I do it. It feels awkward to me, but idk.

Most things about job searching are awkward. Welcome to adulting. Get used to it and get over it quickly. If you want to stand out against every other person with just as good a resume as you, you need to put yourself out there.

Yeah, that's one thing I've noticed is the hiring process can be awkward and the first day. Especially going from getting used to one job, leaving that to go to another job.
