Motherboard for AMD FX-8320

So I've done messed up, choosing the wrong motherboard for my first PC build. I've decided to buy a motherboard that delivers a stable power to the processor for 125 W.

The first board I found was AsRock 970 Pro 3. I was recommended to get a better board since FX-83xx processors pulls more than 140 W. So the 2nd choice I have is ASUS M5A78l-M Plus/USB3. Is it a good choice? Furthermore, my choices are limited to Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX motherboards only since my case is small.

Don't touch Asrock with a 10 foot pole.

Get 990 chipset motherboard from MSI or Asus (check compatibility beforehand, ofc)

Not for me. So far only had 4 Asus motherboards die and the newest one is about 10 years old.

Asrock, on the other hand, has an entire section in the cemetery.

4 is a lot, I've dealt with lots of motherboards and the only one to have died so far was a Gigabyte board because of user error (my friend bent the crap outta the pins while re-placing the CPU..)

I used to be quite active here.

4 over 12-odd years of building systems? Keep in mind I never said they died out while new.

I'm using an ASRock Z170 Extreme4 for my home rig paired with an i7-6700K @4,7Ghz and an ASRock X99X Fatal1ty Killer paired with an i7-5820K @4,5GHz atm, also used an ASRock 990FX Killer with an FX-8350 @4,5GHz and they all are/were less problematic than Gigabyte and MSI boards that I've had to deal with. I on the other hand would recommend their boards (not all models, obviously) as stable and reliable with great and easy-to-use UEFI.

I've not worked with Gigabyte motherboards on the red side, that's why I left it out.

My 970 Gaming is 17 months old and so far it's had no issues with my 5Ghz FX4300 (1.53V) with an RX 480 and an R9 270X on the PCI-e slots.

To be honest the most reliable motherboards I've used are EVGAs, with only one having failed on me due to client's error while reapplying thermal paste and putting the CPU the wrong way in. Then there's Asus, Biostar, MSI, Gigabyte and ECS, mostly in that order.

The AsRock 970 Pro 3, and ASUS M5A78L-M Plus / USB3 aren't very good motherboards -- especially if you plan to use it with a FX-8xxx CPU.

And even worse if you decide to do any overclocking!

A quality 990FX board would be preferable, but not necessary -- as they can be quite expensive.

A 990X (if you can find any), or a better built 970 motherboard will do.

Motherboards based on the 970 chipset

  • ASUS 970 PRO Gaming Aura -- RGB lighting, but you pay a higher price premium for it
  • MSi 970A Gaming Pro Carbon -- Again, RGB lighting for a higher cost, fancier version of the MSi 970 Gaming
  • MSi 970 Gaming
  • Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
  • ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 -- Essentially a beefed up M5A97 R2.0 with more USB ports, and larger heatsinks and a 6+2 power phase (vs 4+2)
  • ASUS M5A97 R 2.0
  • AsRock 970 Performance

Motherboards based on the 990X chipset (not many left these days)

  • ASUS M5A99X EVO R 2.0
  • Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 R5

Motherboards based on the 990FX chipset (that is reasonably priced)

  • Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 R5
  • Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R5
  • Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Ultra -- Basically the UD3 R5 with reinforced PCI-E slots, M.2 SSD support, and USB 3.1 support (vs USB 3.0)
  • Gigabyte 990FX Gaming
  • MSi 990FXA Gaming
  • ASUS M5A99FX R 2.0

Choose the one that has the features and colour(s) that you like.

Thank you verymuch to all who responded!

Looks like a new ATX supporting chassis and MSI 970 Gaming is a cheapest and reliable choice for me.
