PS3 and PS4 complete teardown and rebuild ... maybe?

WkdPaul

So, while I was walking to my car this morning, something caught my eyes in the neighbor's recycling bin ... "Nah..." was what my brain answered.

After starting the car and cleaning up the small amount of snow I had on the car, curiosity got me and I decided to double check, surely, I was wrong. Turns out there was a PS3 and a PS4 in the recycling bin (so I WAS right!)!!!!!

Both are missing the HDD but who cares. They are in BAD condition (cigarette smoke stain and ashes everywhere), but might still be working if they are cleaned (finger's crossed!);

Somehow the PS4 has lots of cigarette ashes around the Blu-ray (at the bottom);

The PS3 is the "phat" model, one of the early models that has a PS2 inside.

So I started opening the PS3 and DAMNN!!!!!! :o

After a while, I got it out of it's cage of plastic, metal and cigarette dirt;

Cleaned everything up, alcohol for the electronics and soap with hot water for the plastics and heatsink (some might find it disgusting!);

So the PS3 is drying out and will be reassembled and tested tomorrow, the PS4 is waiting teardown, unfortunately we can't locate the security torx set we have at work so I'll have to bring mine tomorrow. I did all that at work when I had nothing to do, maybe an hour or so.

For now, seems the PS4 might be in the same dirty cigarette smoked condition;

Stay tuned for the conclusion tomorrow, and thanks to iFixit for their detailed teardowns! That actually helped a lot more than I thought! :)

I wonder what the viability of you putting the PS3 in something else other than back in its case and using a juryrigged CPU heatsink?

For now I would simply be happy if I can revive one of them.

Worst case scenario, I'll sell the PS4 on eBay, broken PS4 seems to sell for $90-120 CAD, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Does it happen to have any controller with it?

Nope, the power cables were not even there, they really just put the consoles in the bin.

Why would anyone buy a broken PS4 for that much?    Idk exactly how your sort-of money translates to USD but as much as $120 CAD seems very high for a paperweight.

No idea, I just checked eBay and they sell for that much (looked at auctions with bids, not "buy now" auctions).

$120 CAD is around $90 USD ;)

Yeah $90 seems too much.  If it was me I'd just save up and buy a new PS4.

Hopefully they work after being cleaned.  Idk why anyone would pay the money for those and get them so icky...

Cleaned up the PS4 and it has the BLOD, not related to the PSU so it might be because it overheated.

Not sure if it could be fixed, I'm thinking I'll just sell it "as-is" on eBay!
