Which GTX 1080 to buy??

Deadlyinx

I hope to buy one for VR, and from what I've read the extra power of the 1080 is worth $200 over the 1070.

As for which 1080, I've looked all over and everyones opinion is different. Even looking at a brand like MSI has like 10 variations, and I'm clueless on how they affect cooling/noise and performance. I'd appreciate someone just telling me what to get, prefer to spend close to $600, just want a solid card.

CPU: i5-6600k

Ram: 16gb

1080 is not worth it over the 1070 200 dollar more doesn't justify the performance upgrade.

Wait for Vega, even if it's not something you want the prices on 1080's will plummet.

But if you insist, just avoid EVGA, find the best deal and run with it.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

As above - definitely wait for 1080ti if budget affords it. Just seen another post on the forums about it's imminent arrival. If you look back at the Maxwell architecture, the 980 seems kinda pointless, when you have the 970 (cheaper, and not a lot less powerful) and the 980ti (not much more expensive than the 980 was before it released). If you want/have to get immediately, most of it depends on aesthetics and how much you have to spend.

They used to have a problem on their pascal cards where there VRMs would heat up to 125c+ because they didn't put on thermal pads, but they fixed the manufacturing process now, so it's fine.

They're honestly all about the same performance wise. Some OC better, but that's not guaranteed at all, even within the same card type. I'd go with something from EVGA as they have one of the best warranties in the game.

1080 is still too expensive. its not great for value.

But if u cant wait then buy one from EVGA i heard they already fixed their problem.

I saw the 1080ti confirmed yesterday but I dont want to wait many months, and I dont want to spend a ton more money, $600 is already pushing it. I would consider downgrading to a 1070 but im hesitant for VR, if it was just 1080/1440 gaming i would buy it for sure.

Fair enough. Although the ti isn't likely to be much more expensive, it will definitely cost more! If cost is an issue, then probably go for as low-end a 1080 as possible, while still being from a major brand like MSI, EVGA or Asus etc... Most of the more expensive cards 'simply' have a better cooler for better overclocks/quieter performance, or pre-applied overclocks. The law of diminishing returns definitely applies to video cards once you start going high-end on a certain tier - e.g. instead of a high-end EVGA 1070 Classified, get an EVGA 1080 SC (the cheapest 1080 EVGA sell I think).

Also, as far as I am aware, the 1070 is already a very competent VR card. I couldnt say for sure, but considering the 1060 is baseline (on pascal architecture at least), it will probably be fine for VR today!

The "VR today" worries me a bit just because I want to have a future proof VR setup. There seems so little info on the 1080ti pricing and dates so I would have to choose between the 1080 and 1070. This again seems to be a grey area, some sources say both cards handle VR fine, others say they need every ounce of power for some VR games and the 1080 matters. Not sure if you have any insight, but Im starting to lean towards 1070, any good recommendations for 1070 cards?

If u really want to play vr that bad then go ahead.

But if u want the best bang for the bucks although i am not sure how much will they cost but i am sure it will be competitive enough considering Amd will release vega in a reasonable price.

But if i were you, i will wait for it.

Besides VR is still an early technology.

I better shooting people in the head in Cs Go than playing VR games.

But its all subjective so if u want to play VR then there's nothing wrong with 1070.

I just gave u a suggestion as a fellow LTT member.

I completely get what your saying. The problem is every time I want to upgrade to a new card, people say wait for something better to come out. I still have a 760 for that reason xD and I get what youre saying about VR but I currently have a Vive at home, but not a system that can play it. If a 1070 works fine then i would be happy to save $200.

why? They fixed their VRM problem, and still have the best customer support/warranty and decent cooling solutions

Best customer service you say? So me having purchased a 1050GS only to have EVGA replace it with a refurbished 1000G2 a month later is good customer service? No, EVGA had good customer service, now they rely on your memory of that customer service to hide what they're doing to people.

Like intentionally trying to not use thermal pads, then saying OPPS.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

A thousand bucks? That's a month or two's rent, isn't it?

It happened less than 2 months ago, that's not the past. I also had to go through 3 bad graphics cards before finally fighting to get my money back with EVGA blaming my rig. Funny how not using their card fixed the problem. All of this can be proven as well.

I was a huge EVGA fan, loyal. They're not the same company anymore. The longer that takes to get out the more people who go through what I did.
