Quake 3 in 2016

Does Quake 3 Arena still have enough active servers for me to get something out of it? Been thinking about picking it up from the winter sale as ive always wanted to try one of the classic arena shooters+Defrag looks like great fun.

Try the demo first. I downloaded the demo, and had serious problems running it.

For a game that's 17 years old now (1999-12-02 launch), it's still a decent game but you might have to play around using Compatibility Mode "WinXP SP2" in Win7 and newer due to MANY changes since then.

There is also a Open source clone called OpenArena that's free and will run Q3 maps and .pak files as "mods" (eg: STVoy: Elite Force & ST: Elite Force 2 can be run this way, just a bit of a pain though), if you don't mind playing around a bit to get it or Q3 running.

The list of fixes here might help. Since it's such an old classic, there's a huge amount of information out there to get it running on modern systems. It says a lot for the Quake 3 engine that so many fixes for widescreen resolution, FOV, framerate, etc. are just simple .cfg edits.
