Question about humidity and computers

To make a very long story short and sweet here it goes. My fiance is temporarily ( a yearish) moving to a new house. While painting on the latter I noticed the sealing had a fog to it, the kind a window might have when raining and its very hot/cold. Apparently there are cracks/air leaks to the outside causing major humidity problems. Is this a bad thing for a computer? I don't want to put a couple grand pc in a room that would break it eventually. Any insight?

Humidity is fine until you get to the point of condensation, if the condensation you observed gets to your computer that is an issue however this generally shouldn't happen unless it gets cold with said high humidity.

So the trick would be keeping it warm in the room? Would a dehumidifier help?That's the problem is I don't want condensation occurring in the computer like it did on the wall/ceiling

Yes a dehumidifier would be great to have right beside the PC.

Air conditioners also act as dehumidifiers if you've got one of those in the room already.

No. Dry air can kill PC's since the static charge in the air can be very rapidly discharged. Humid air can cause the charge to dissipate to the point of no issues. Supersaturated air can condense on surface and cause damage to components.

 

Too much humidity is bad and so is very dry air.

Dehumidifier is a great idea if you want to avoid condensation, you could replace the window but you mentioned this was temporary hence that would be a bit overkill.

Nope no air/heat. Only heat is a small furnace in the kitchen. Its a VERY old small house. Any particular dehumidifier specs I should be looking for?

Well if their is condensation on the ceiling I'd consider that beyond safe humidity limits, static isn't an issue if properly grounded

I'd just make sure the unit is reliable, no need for it to be high end a simple one would be fine, your not trying to completely dry out the house just get near the computer to good enough.

This morning was really bad in the garage. Hydrometer showed 94% and the floor felt tacky and nasty.

I can agree with this, I have turned down some employment opportunities since I want to stay out of that hellhole, it's humid, buggy and you cant even swim without worry of gators

The gator would probably be more hospitable versus the weather.
