Just purchased a brand new OC Sapphire Rx480 and after less than a week looks like its dead? Or is it? Thats why I'm here as I know there are many knowledgeable people here so If anyone in the community can help that would be great.

My PC-

MSI X99 Pro Carbon

Intel 6800k (Minor OC to 3.9 using msi click bios one touch)

Corsair RM850x

27 LG 4k Monitor

DDR4  32g Corsair vengeance lpx 3000

Corsair Hydro H60

Windows 10

Crucial MX300  525gb

Ok So my MB does not have a video output so in order to see anything I need to have an a video card. I was using my GTX 750 but I wanted something newer that wouldn't break the bank and would have FreeSync (since my monitor has it), so I settled on the Nitro+OC480. Now it was working great for the first couple of days and I finally got a free day to spend sometime tinkering to see if I could squeeze an extra few ponies out of this puppy.

So spent the better part of today using afterburner to try and get a good OC going. While using MSI AB, I manged to get the core clock from 1342MHz to 1460MHz (Hadnt touched memory yet so still at 2000 MHz).  I had the Voltage set at 0 (hadn't added any), and had the power limit to a +30. Power draw on the card was showing a max of 176 watts, and the max temp on the GPU got to about 64c tops(cpu temps were nice and cool no issue there).

So I was running some benchmarks using Heaven and Valley, and while at the 1460MHz, I was getting a couple of hang ups where it would stop for a sec and then start again, so my OC was not stable yet so I was working on fine tuning it a bit more.

As I went ahead and increased the power limit to +35 to see if that could get me stable, I applied the setting and went to run MSI Kombuster, almost Immediately the PC Locked up, I got a black screen/flash, and the PC looked like it was restarting but...... It nothing came back on the screen. The PC was running nothing was showing on my montior, so I switched the HDMI cable to my other old monitor and still nothing. Shut off the computer, turned back on and still nothing was displaying. There is an error code on the MB it was showing "d6".

So here is the general gist of what I tried to see if anything would change and the card would work (also to point out these cards come with an RGB light controlled by a switch on the card, and the color changing was working but nothing else):

-Tried using the display port cable, along with all ports

-Removed the card reseated

-Removed the card reseated and changed the power cable from PSU

-Removed the card and tried other pci slots

-Switched the bios switch on my MB (it has 2)

-Cleared the CMOS on my MB

-Switched the bios switch on the GPU card (it brings one)

-Tried running the GTX and the Rx480 at the same time (had them both in a slot) just to see if they would show up in device manager (GTX showed, Rx did not)

-Tried using AMD software to detect if I needed driver update, ran it and it said that I didn't have any AMD products only said I had the GTX

-Installed my old GTX 750 on the MB and tested all pci slots (GTX worked on all slots no problem, PC started right up, so MB and everything else works as Im using the PC right now).

So their you have it folks, any thoughts suggestions? Do you need any information? Does anyone have any Idea how to fix this or is my card toast? If the car toasted, anyone have any good Idea how this could have happened, considering my temps where good and no extra voltage was added.

I appreciate any help thanks.

Seems thorough. Although with your setup for a 4k rig, if it is in fact dead, upgrade to either a 1070 or if you can swing it a 1080 so you can actually enjoy 4k gaming. Unfortunately unless running in crossfire (Not recommended) most games at 4k for that will be lower than even 30 FPS, thats not even with the graphics cranked. This card was according to AMD (VR for the masses), but mainly its just a massive value, for mid range rigs, or 1080P.

Well if the GPU is new, you can just send it back and get new one or refund.

You should add more voltage when you are increasing power limit and overclocking it in general.

Don't be so scared of adding those additional 100mV. I always pushed that to the limit and had no problems at all.

And I do agree with @Thinkfreely about buying better GPU.

RX 480 is meant for 1080p gaming.

And I see that you have decent CPU + mobo and everything else ... so why did you cheap out on GPU?

Which is why were both stumped with his choices, that whole rig is overkill for the GPU.

Unless he's not gaming.

Maybe he's editing? Or doing something else?
Believe it or not, gaming isn't the only reason to have a powerful computer.

I would actually agree that high end creation is actually a better reason to sink this much money into it. But even then a 480 wouldn't be ideal.

Yeah could be the reason.

It's just not so often to see anyone with i7 6800k CPU and 200$ GPU in the system.

But yes, people have differend needs from PC.

Unfortunately I dont have another PC, just an old Laptop and and a 8 year old pc (that wont help much). If I had another PC/MB/CPU with integrated graphics that would have helped. My MB does not have any video out ports.

Yeah looks like that is the only thing I can do since I still have time for a return. I was hoping to save a trip to the mall if I could fix the issue on my own (assuming the issue could be fixed and there was just an error in my troubleshooting).

I was getting ready to start adding some mV actually that was my next step to tantalize as I think I was reaching my limit.

Well regarding the getting the better GPU, yes I was thinking about the 1070 but of course you know I wanted to save a couple of bucks since I wasn't going to be doing much gaming or at least my pc is not really "ment" for gaming, I use it as my all around work etc(even though I was getting some decent play-ability on 4k settings in TR, and 2k settings was very good with the card). Of course the question would probably be, why OC if not gaming then. Mostly because I  want ever ounce of power I paid for and because its there as a bonus. The other reason is that I needed a card with FreeSync since thats what my monitor has.

Yeah I run a bunch of VM Servers and Networking Emulators, its mainly my strong rig for my home lab to do work on.

Bad OC on MSI Afterburner?

You See thats what I'm saying? WTF happened to my card. I didn't do some huge OC that would just mess up my card in one shot (or again at least I dont think I did).

I got the same the same shut down except my car never booted back into windows not even once, plus I hadn't saved the profile to start on boot.

Also since the computer was fairly new I forgot to mention that my last troubleshooting step, was basically to refresh windows and start all over again (I saved all my work on my external HDs and figured I would just reinstall any programs). After I refreshed windows to clean start, I tried using the Rx480 again, to see if it would be recognized and start up and nope nothing.

With, that said is there anything in my MSI tweaking that could have messed up the card? Or did I just luck out with a really bad card that would have failed my in a couple of weeks? Definitely no smoke or burning smell coming from the card at all.

Probably just a bad card, probably just accelerated how quickly it was going to die a little.

(I actually recently had a Motherboard die after 3 days of use with no overclocking :( )

Most 480's can't seem to hit 1400mhz, also why not just wattman?

If you end up returning it pick up the XFX model or ASUS Strix 480 if you want to try for extreme Overclocking

Yes which is why I was happy that I was getting an OC higher than 1400Mhz. It was quite stable above the 1400 until I got to that 1460 mark. I really liked the design and look of the Nitro, but yeah getting another sapphire card scares me a little  (Perhaps getting the XFX would work better).

As for not using wattman; well basically I saw that the majority of people where recommending using MSI AF.

Wattman is pretty damned good, I have some doubts of it being a nitro card issue, you might have just screwed it up a bit with such a heavy OC, does it work fine if you restore it back to stock settings?

The XFX GTR just seems to be everyone's favorite 480, Jayz's card ran at like 100W with it's stock settings
