If you aren't going to build the rig until summer, making a parts list now won't be all that helpful. I would recommend the i3 +1050ti

AMD Zen is about to be released in this 16th of december, and Kaby Lake is also right next the corner, since you're not buying anything yet you should wait to see what these new processors can offer, it would only make sense buy now if you're going for a high end cpu like the i7 6700 because it'll still be completely up-to-date and as we know Intel is not the type to reduce pricing even when new stuff hit the market.

i3-6100 and 1050ti for a more balanced system. As others have said, AMD and Intel are releasing new CPU's early 2017 so it is best to wait until then.

Would the g3258 bottleneck the 1060 even at 4.5ghz oc?

Very much so in many games. A dual core CPU with anything more than a 950/460 is just going to lead to very bad times in many newer AAA games.

I have high hopes for zen, but kabylake?nahh. Hope the skylake cheaps out when kabylake comes in. But if zen has a good chip similar performance at cheaper, I might go for it

I don't think it's recommended... clock speed isn't everything, you would be safer with the i3 6100 for the gtx1060, that is considering your goal is 1080p gaming... but 2 cores even with HT is soon to be not enough so have that in mind.

Intel CPU's don't go down in price when a new architecture comes out (usually). Especially when Kabylake and Skylake will be similar in performance, prices won't change much.

Unless at higher resolutions.

@Doggy McDogface I would hold off on any PCPP builds for now regarding CPU/motherboard until 2Q17. Kaby Lake will have a new chipset for the extra features that it contains (source: Intel) while AMD Zen has not been fully revealed yet.

Not by enough that the issue is drastic. 30hz is still playable with frame-limiting or V-Sync.

If you're waiting until summer of 2017, deciding on a processor/mobo combo right now is a waste of time. I suspect the GPUs available in that entry to midrange segment now will look a lot like the ones available next summer, so maybe budgeting for a GPU isn't a bad idea, but Zen and Kaby Lake may change the landscape for processors to the point that the G3258 is more obsolete than it already is.

Even now, I'd be looking at a G4400 over a G3258, even though the G4400 can't be overclocked. Unlike Kaby Lake's relationship with Skylake, Skylake is just all-around better than Haswell/Devil's Canyon to the point where a G4400 that's a little weaker but upgradeable to an i5-6500 or i7-6700 beats a G3258-4690/4790 would be my choice.

Pointless if you're waiting that long, as others have said. I too hope Zen is great! We'll see though. AMD has a habit of overhyping its products. Fingers crossed.

It's being teased IIRC, not released. They're just showing off its "performance". I think I read that it's an esports player that plays Dota etc, not exactly something that's hard to play. I also hate the pin layout AMD decided to go with again.
