Hello!

I am building a server for my father's business and I am currently choosing the parts. I just wanted to know if they are OK.

CPU: Intel xeon e3 1245 v5

RAM: kingston valueram ddr4 1x16gb ecc

PSU: Corsair cs 600w 80+ gold (does it come with a warranty?)

MoBo: supermicro x11-ssl-o mATX intel c232 chipset

CPU cooler: Cooler Master T2

HDD: 4 x Western Digital red 2tb on raid 10

I understand that my motherboard's chipset can have a raid 10 array without a physical card,  is that ok? Or the performance would be bad?

And do you know an mATX case that could fit all these parts? Or a cheap nice looking atx case. I was thinking about the NZXT S340 but it would be empty..

Thanks,  Thomas.

If its for a buiness, Id get something like a dell t330. Your paying for support, so when something goes wrong, there there the next day fo fix it.

What OS. What are you doing with it? Are you using AD and the like?

Don't use mobo raid, get a raid card, or use software raid.

Go for a prebuilt the support for them is worth it.

Why get a s340 is someone going to be looking at the server while it is running? and the t2 cooler is useless just keep with the stock intel one.

If it just fir storing files I say just by a NAS unless there a need to run a server suck as email, dns, development and so on then a NAS works out far far cheaper.

i have two things to say here:

1: what is your budget? because that's A LOT of wrong choices piled up there...

2: do you have a nearby company that specializes in this stuff? you'll have to pay more most likely, but the support they provide is often worth the price premium tenfold when talking buisiness critical machines.

IMO if you have to come onto a forum for advice, you shouldn't be building a server for any business.

IMO if you're a buisiness you shouldnt be building your own server at all. (with a few exceptions)

#1 Rule when getting a server for a business is go for an oem like DELL, HP, LENOVO, etc. If anything goes wrong with it they will have countless professional techs to help you that will know far far far more then you will. Warranty, support, and the actual product are what you are paying for. Yes it will most likely cost a bit more but the savings in the long run can be astronomical if anything goes wrong during any part of the process. (IE. all servers are fully tested and guaranteed to work BEFORE they are sent to you. (If it ends up having a problem they will replace it at no cost to you most of the time) Many OEMS will even send their own techs to you to set it up and be sure you can get it running right and proper.

Yes many of us build and run our own servers BUT they are for our own personal use so any issues we have to deal with ourselves. Many run older oem servers we got secondhand but because they are oem they have a certain amount of reliability still. The whole thing of building your own server is not trivial at all.

Exceptions being LMG. As others have said, get a pre-built system that comes with support. You'll be better off in the long run.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

well, no, rather exceptions being if making the server would be part of what your buisiness does.

i mean, i doubt puget has HP servers in their clouset :P

and offcourse, for people like LMG making that server means they can make content about it, and content means profit.

You know what I meant, right? People like LMG can make servers because they are knowledgeable enough and want to so they can make money. People building servers for businesses, but don't know anything about servers shouldn't. As for a place like Puget Systems, look what they do for their company! They build systems, so naturally they could build their own servers.

even within the IT related company world the ones that should go custom are fairly slim.

an example would be the IT company around the corner from me, they provide "total IT solutions" for companies too small to have an IT department of their own. but for them an hour spent on making a server is an hour not spent on paying custommers, it would also mean deviating from a standard, and standardisation is why they managed to go from zero to becoming bigger than the place that has been doing *ALL* IT in my town since the 90s in just a few years. for them its essentially better to get an off the shelf solution from the likes of HP because then they know what's inside it better than when they'd build it themselves, on top of which they'd save A TON of hours, which if you're always fully booked and get €48 per 15 minutes.. :P
