CPU recommendations for a LGA1150 motherboard

I just transferred my mITX build into a NZXT H440 so I got a new Z97 motherboard to fit my current 4670k CPU. So I still have my old LGA 1150 motherboard and the case and I would like to give much better PC to my dad for christmast so I'm looking at a good CPU that can do office job, ebay and watching videos.

 

So I'm either wanting to upgrade my current CPU (4670k) to something more powerful even though I heard the new CPUs are only 12% better (correct?) or get either a used LGA1150 CPU or something else. What would you recommend? Not necessarily cheapest but would be ideal. I do have to buy some RAM and a SSD so...

Honestly an i3-4160 will be enough for his light usage case. The best thing you can give a casual user is an SSD.

Is the 4170 better than a 4160, or it's just it's updated version, like 4670k to 4690k?

G3258 can be overclocked really well on most boards. It's inexpensive, fast, and can serve an HTPC pretty well for 60hz gaming.

 

@TheMidnightNarwhal If you can find a Xeon 1231-v3 for cheap, it'd be a good choice as well, but doesn't allow overclocking.

yep zen is coming out - with that being said, buy intel, they know what they do :-)

and to ragefuel even more: don't buy ati - buy nvidia ### not acer  but asus

AMD does fit in LGA1150. You need a few tools to accomplish the job correctly though. You'll need an AR-15 (or AK if your accuracy is already terrible), a firing range, and eye/ear protection.

Yeah it will do.

 

A Haswell Pentium will be cheaper and be fine as well, but the additional CPU power might be worth it if that computer's gonna do some multitasking.
