Posted November 19, 2016 So I finally saved up enough money to upgrade to skylake & ddr4. Should I get: Z97 Krait Edition -> Z170A Krait <-- this in the only mbo I'm getting if I'm going skylake, I love the color scheme i5 4690k -> i5 6500 <-- I don't care about overclocking, not a tiny bit 16 gb ddr3 -> 16gb ddr4 Or should I wait for ZEN & KABY LAKE? Posted November 19, 2016 Depends how much time you are willing to wait. if you want a PC now, get skylake if you are looking to upgrade sometime soon, or just don't need an upgrade immediately, then waiting for Zen might be a good idea. note though that Kaby lake is almost exactly the same as skylake QUOTE/TAG ME WHEN REPLYING Spend As Much Time Writing Your Question As You Want Me To Spend Responding To It. Posted November 19, 2016 I would rather upgrade the GPU, the i5 4690K is plenty powerful, if anything is holding you back its that 950. Get a GTX 1060 or something. Posted November 19, 2016 Not worth it IMO. I definitely wouldn't go for the Z170A Krait, it's terrible for the price. The Z97 Krait board was excellent, but they really skimped on the Z170A Krait, it's not even full ATX. The Z170A KRAIT GAMING 3X is the decent Z170 Krait board, but there's better options for the price. I would wait and save up for a more worth while upgrade, or buy in the post-Christmas sales. Is there any good same priced white-black alternatives You can have a look at things like the Asus Z170-A, Asus Z170 PRO GAMING/AURA (RGB control stuff), MSI Z170A SLI (mainly black). There's a fairly good deal on the MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon on Newegg. If you have the budget, it's an excellent board. Mostly black, but has RGB lighting and good components. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130919&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker, LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= We seem to be moving more and more towards blacked out boards with RGB lighting, particularly in the higher end. Black and white boards still seem to be uncommon. It's pretty much the Asus Z170-A, Pro and Deluxe and MSI Krait boards right now. Posted November 19, 2016 4690k to 6500 is more of a sidegrade than anything. Upgrade your GPU and then in a year or two buy whatever new CPU comes out. Posted November 19, 2016 You will lose performance not worth it at all, the higher clocks of the 4690k outweigh architecture improvments. Keep what you have Skylake is hardly any better in terms of IPC. Kabby Lake is just a Skylake refresh with the same IPC so not worth it either. You GPU is bottlenecking a lot anyway that is the first thing up be upgraded. Posted November 19, 2016 You really should not "upgrade" to skylake from i5 4690k, because overclocking it will make it faster than the i5 6500, and even if you were upgrading to an i5 6600k, the performance improvement isn't worth the money. The ram upgrade also isn't worth changing the mobo and cpu. I would say upgrade to skylake only if you go for an i7 6700k or something, but if not, I would advise for you to wait another generation or 2 of cpus before upgrading. Take the money you save by not upgrading and buy a gtx 1060 or even a 1070. You will not regret it.
