really long Ethernet cable

so stupid question but my router is at the other side of the house from my computer. whats a cheap and easy way to get an Ethernet cable connecting the two without running a miles long cable that is going to trip everyone up?

pull it trough the floors or trough the walls. probably not that expensive and you're going to get it at with the best possible latency etc.

Assuming both locations have a power supplies near them, google "Powerline adapters".  It'll be difficult to get gigabit throughput, but it avoids messing around with cables.

 

Essentially it uses your homes power cables to transfer the packets over.  We have two in the house and get near enough 800Mb/s throughput.  As we only have 90mb internet, there isn't really much bottleneck.

I know for Jayztwocents in a video he made after he moved to his new place, he showed himself testing out a powerline adapter vs a wifi adapter, the powerline one performing better.

I get exactly the same speed with wifi and with ethernet cable, and I'm two floors up my router.

I had this idea a while ago but I settled in for a Wifi Repeater(does the job but not that good). Don't you need 2 of those(powerline adapters) one connected to the router and the other one near the area you want connection in?

You can't get the same speed on Wifi as you do with wired. Wifi is Half Duplex while wired is Full Duplex. This means even when connection rates are equal wifi will be half the speed of wired. This also does not take into account interference latency increases etc. At this point, wifi plays 2nd fiddle to wired.

If you are lazy: just run the cable out through a window, run it on the outside wall, get it back in through a window. If you don't use weatherproof cable you are going to have to replace it every 3+ years (depends how much it moves and how much temperature variation there is)
cat 5e is dirt cheap.

Then your WiFi speed is high enough that even at the half duplex it operates on you can still achieve the same throughput between the two. You would more notice the difference between local file transfers where wired would be 1Gbps and wireless would struggle to achieve half of that.

Exactly! As a side note, speed tests such as Ookla test Download then Upload. As a result, they are not testing them at the same time. In most cases, your home Internet will not make this issue apparent unless you have major interference or numerous devices sharing the bandwidth.

For long term installation, you could run the Ethernet through the walls and set up proper Ethernet outlets in different rooms.  It'd be best to consult a professional installation company for this but it'd be the cleanest solution and probably add a bit to your homes resale value.
