As mentioned before, hacking is an umbrella term that can include legal and illegal activities.

Other mods have looked at this thread and for now it doesn't break any rules.

If you think hacking is only related to illegal activities, I would recommend that you look into the term "white hat hacker"

A hacker would normally be someone that knows some programming languages and know how different systems interact with each other. It also helps to think outside the box.

I see you're already a student. That's great, because my advice is, that if you want to learn cybersecuirty topics, would be, to switch your major to CSE and then focus on your schools cyber security offerings.

"white hat" though legal still has ethical issues. I actually did an essay on that very subject.

The media has twisted what hacker means. Someone who breaks into a system is not a hacker they are a cracker.

You might consider Lynda.com Im sure they have something on their.  Or maybe look at classes at a community college. Cyber Security is becoming a big deal. Knowing how to break in to computer systems can help you secure them. Just make sure your using these skills for good purposes and not bad purposes. What ever you do, dont test these skills out on systems other than yours. I can tell you, the US Government takes hacking very seriously. They have been know to take away computer and internet privileges and throw people in prison for many years. Just make sure you stay on the right side of the law.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

A common way for malicious hackers to beach into a company's systems today is calling or emailing some of the employees and fool them into giving you their username and password.

What about making free long distance calls with simple tones?

Totally agree with the ethics part, though something unethical isn't necessarily illegal.

As for cracker, that's again another "umbrella" term and is, IMO, too vague. I myself found security flaws in an online store I'm using, I found it by mistake and to find it, I didn't need any software, hardware or social engineering skills since the whole problem was a lack of knowledge or experience on the part of the programmers that made the website.

Basically, don't implement invoice numbers in a simple incremental way and then leave the whole */invoices/* folder unsecured... ;)

That might seem simple but the people that made the website didn't thought about it.

For starters learn about networking and all the different protocols, and knowing c and python would definetly help. Just don't try it on anyone else's stuff, otherwise you can get some really heavy punishments.

tbh The tool of choice is a virtual machine running Kali Linux its a linux distro that is a successor / contains all the programs and utilities that Backtrack had.

first, you should probably look for videos on how to use linux, and familiarise yourself with the commands. Most programs don'T have UI's. (say John The Ripper) but some do (say webscarab)

then id get on the easy hacks first,  SQL injections, password cracking....  if you want, PM me, I have a vulnerable VM I can give you to log into. then you can hack it as you want. cus its a vm on your machine.

good luck !

Yea, but there is a fine line between ethical hacking and illegal/malicious hacking. And since OP states he had done some wifi hacking, (which can be illegal dependent on country) I wrote it off as the bad side of hacking.

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

its illegal, as long as you don'T have written permission from the owner you are not allowed to do anything, even scanning ip adresses would be illegal.
