In order to play DVD movies, much like Blu-Ray movies, you need a codec. Since Windows 8, Microsoft sales the DVD codec to play DVD movies as an extra. The company decided to pull the codec out of the OS as very few people uses their disk drive, let alone play a movie inside. They know this, thanks to telemetry data collected.

Here are your options for Windows 10.

  1. You can get Windows DVD Player app from the App Store. It is $15.00, and like all apps purchased from the store, it is for up to 10 PCs/accounts. So, if your account is on the system, or you add your account to another existing account (you can do this), you can share your purchase with other users. So for example, if you have a PC with 3 accounts... say a family computer. You can link your account to the other 2 accounts (assuming that the third account is yours, else link the third one as well), and those account can have access to all your purchased apps, including the DVD player.

  2. You can buy a DVD player software. You have WinDVD and PowerDVD which are popular choices. PowerDVD cost currently $48, but also includes Blu-Ray playback codec. WinDVD is $60, and can only play DVD movies (for Blu-Ray you need to pay extra).

  3. Use a free solution. You have programs like VLC, where because they are a French company, they follow French laws, and this allows them to get and provide DVD codec for free to its users.

  4. If you bought a DVD player or a Blu-ray player, or a pre-built system from like Dell, HP, Acer, etc. you should have WinDVD or PowerDVD included with the system, or in the case of a purchased optical drive, you should have a disk with either software for it.

Hope this helps.

Kodi, or VLC media player. VLC plays like any file format known to man.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
