SpaceX has finally solved what caused the Falcon 9 explosion

Guest

September 1, 2016 was a day of mystery for SpaceX when their Falcon 9 rocket which was equipped with Amos-6, Spacecom's satellite, blew up

The satellite was Facebook's attempt to provide internet access to parts of Africa

Elon Musk has finally spoken on what they believed caused the explosion

Quote

“I think we’ve gotten to the bottom of the problem,” Musk said, describing the issue as one that had “never been encountered before in the history of rocketry.”

Musk said “it basically involves liquid helium, advanced carbon fiber composites, and solid oxygen. Oxygen so cold that it actually enters solid phase.”

There have been many speculations as to what may have caused the explosion from conspiracies of rival companies attempting sabotage all the way to the aliens, yes that scapegoat

However, much like what Musk himself had previously pointed out was that the oxygen had a bad reaction with one of the rocket's components.

Quote

“It might have been formation of solid oxygen in the carbon over-wrap of one of the [helium] bottles in the upper stage tanks,” according to an excerpt of Musk’s remarks. “If it was liquid, it would have been squeezed out. But under pressure it could have ignited with the carbon. This is the leading theory right now, but it is subject to confirmation.”

There are worries that some companies may back out from planning any more flights from SpaceX

Last Thursday, Inmarsat, European satellite company, stated that they were looking for alternatives due to the many delays that the explosion has caused

I personally think that the company will still garner customers given the increasing demand for cheaper commercial Spaceflight

Companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic have become more competitive over the past few years

I hope this will lead to man finally reach infinity and beyond....and scene

That is most intriguing, especially when taking oxygen's state of matter under pressure and temperature into account. Oxygen is pretty reactive, then there's carbon fiber.

a bit of a mistitling, isn't it? They haven't solved anything. At best they have a guess rising above other guesses in terms of likelihood but as you yourself quoted, "-- This is the leading theory right now, but it is subject to confirmation."

Me today learn something. Me learned me know nothing. What else do we have to go on? They need to sort this out fast because even NZ has a privately owned space rocket manufacturer. I'm pretty sure India and China have launched satellites into space but I dont know if they have commercial success.

Actually that quote was from 2 months ago a month ago in a Conference with Engineers and Astronomers

Elon Musk had an idea on what happened which has now been proved to be the cause

China just launched there biggest rocket just yesterday: http://www.popsci.com/china-launches-its-largest-ever-rocket-long-march-5

Though commercial flights are quite new it is seeing quite a fast spurt because of increasing public and private interest in space

SpaceX reinventing the rocket

when was the last time NASA had a rocket blow up during fueling?

i wonder if this is the reason that aliens dont talk to us. we blame a lot of things on them when we dont know if they exist imagine what would happen if we know that they exist. they will be getting hate mail for everything from a terrorist attack to someone's dog going missing
