4K with lower settings or Ultra 1440p / 1080p?

Eeglis

I've got a GTX 1080, but a terrible display, a 46" TV, so the ppi is quite low. So what would you guys recommend, sticking with 1080p everything cranked up, get a 1440p 144hz monitor or should I move to 4K 144hz, when it's going to be released?

no idea what to put here

How about 4K 144hz with G-sync (whenever it's gonna be available)

If you can afford it, but a single 1080 can barley push 60fps maxed. Even at high it wont hit that, you would need to SLI (But that has its own problems). You would prprobably have to wait until early next year for them to come out anyway.

I'm not trying to get 4K 60fps with maxed settings, I'm asking if  4K would look good with lower settings at let's say 60fps, and then for more competetive games I could lower my resolution to 1080p @ 144hz. Or what do you think?

You could hit 60 fps at high settings no issue, but it wont hit the full 144 fps if you decide to wait for one. For competitive games, 1440p or 1080p will run much better.

If you get a true 4K 144z display, 1080p would scale very well, and wouldn't look too bad. any other resolutions scaling would look kind of poopy, like 1080p to ultra HD.

GTX 1080 can hardly get around 40 fps at 4K

GTX Titan X Pascal can get around 50-55fps at 4K

So you would need 3 or more GPUs in SLI to get more than 120fps.

Even 1440p at 144fps is hard on GTX 1080 in SLI.

We have to get 4K at 60fps with single GPU first, then we can talk about 144Hz at 4K.

true 4k 4096x2160 displays are expensive af, just get a 1440p G-sync one (If you get g sync, fps doesn't really matter due to adaptive refresh rates).

Thats totally not how SLI works.

If single GPU give 50fps, 2 GPUs won't give 100fps and 3 won't give 150fps.

I'm well aware of that.

Butt if single GPU can give 50-55fps, 3 of them can be capable of 120fps in well scalled and optimised games.

I had 3x Titan X Pascal in mind for 120fps on 4K.

You would need 4x GTX 1080 to get even close to it.

And since 3 and 4 way SLI is not officially supported anymore (or at least Nvidia doesn't recommend it), I was just trying to say that 4K with 144Hz is kinda pointless for gaming right now.

Yeah you could turn down some settings to get 144fps on 4K, but it wouldn't look as good.

I dont think any games are playable with 3-way SLI at the moment - even if you would achieve 120fps through raw GPU horsespower somehow, the game would still be unplayable because of scaling issues.

Its best to settle for 60hz at 4k at the moment :)
