980 ti Sli? Or should I wait..?

takoofapoc

Been looking on ebay and craigslist, and I have been seeing some pretty good deals on used 980 ti's (300-350$ range sometimes less). This is my current build.

Would It be worth it to upgrade to a second 980 ti, if I could get a good deal on it? Or, should I just wait for the 1080 ti? (Also was considering buying a used Titan X if I found a good deal on one)

I know I would probably have to upgrade my power supply to a 850-1000 watt unit, but I am sure I could get some of my money back from the old one. Opinions? I'm kinda torn...

Thanks.

Edit: Also forgot to mention, if I buy another brand other than my MSI 980 ti, will there be complications with compatibility? Or will I just have to match their clock speeds to match?

I would wait for a 1080 ti if possible. 980ti sli should perform in some game where sli is supported better than a single 1080. Or a used Titan XP.

The power supply is enough, don't fret about upgrading it if you do go and SLI.

Hmmm. Would I still be able to have some headroom for OC'ing the gpu's? Also my 6700k is OC'd to 4.5ghz, not sure how much of a difference from the normal tpd that would make.

People tend to exaggerate the additional power consumption that comes from overclocking... worst case scenario, the total system will only consume 600-650W at max load with everything heavily overclocked. Still gives you about a 100W of headroom... and it's also worth noting that the Corsair AX760 is one of the best power supplies when it comes to quality and performance.

But keep in mind that OP might upgrade to a 980ti SLI too so 750w might come close especially when ocing gpu/cpu

Read above. Two GTX 980Tis in SLI won't come close to 750W.

I just got rid of 1 of my 2 980 Ti's in prep for a 1080 Ti but I'm kinda thinking about skipping it. I'm playing at 3440x1440p and it's still a very solid card at that resolution. Doom on high settings gets me over 100fps and BF1 maxed with 100% resolution scale gets me 65fps+.

Sure 980 Ti's are cheap now and they're a heck of a deal but they're going to lose more value over time.

Main PC CPU: 7700K, MOBO: Asus Strix, GPU: Aorus Extreme 3080, PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 750, RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB Storage: 970 Evo 1tb

Lounge PC CPU: 4790K MOBO: Asus Hero VII GPU: EVGA 3060 Ti PSU: Corsair RM650 RAM: Kingston HyperX 16gb Storage: 970 Evo 1TB
