Microsoft's research helped Gears of War 4's audio sound so good

Epic asked Microsoft to help them with the audio for Gears of War 4. Microsoft developed Triton, an audio analyzing engine that can mix audio sounds in real-time to create realistic occlusion (when something blocks sounds), reflections, and reverberations. Most other game engines use a kludge of muting/lowering the volume of sounds, but they sound the same otherwise regardless of what's around you. A snippet from the article:

Obstruction and occlusion are what keeps dialogue or battle sounds in adjacent rooms from playing at full volume, confusing the player as they walk around an environment, too. Rather than adjusting the levels of audio clips for distance, Triton considers the simulated materials and acoustical properties of the surrounding gamespace. Sound bounces off of a cave wall differently than a deserted hospital, so Triton does its best to simulate that.

 

If you need an example of obstruction and occlusion gone horribly wrong, fire up the recently released BioShock Collection -- also based on a version of the Unreal Engine. Early on in the first game, a splicer enemy is singing a lullaby to the revolver in her baby stroller. Yes, she's crazy, and the scene is absolutely creepy. But her voice sounds clear as day from two rooms over when there's 30 feet (and a wall) between you. This is the type of thing that robs a scene of its immersion and atmosphere and undermines the developer's intent: to make you forget you're playing a video game.

Now all we need is a real-time binaural mixer, like Aureal's A3D, back in service and I might consider using headphones for playing games.

Didn't nvidia develop this for VR audio? Might not be out yet but was still a thing

I have a 5.1 setup because stereo headphones with virtual surround sounds fake to me (too much echoing or reverb I feel) and I doubt headphones with multiple speakers has enough oomph in each of those drivers to deliver. The only thing I consider remotely realistic for surround sound headphones is the virtual barber shop, which uses binaural recording.

Thats pretty impressive, I did think the audio on Gears 4 was pretty good have to admit. Can't stop playing it, great game.

I assume that it is exaggerated for this demo. 

 

It is good but the effect is too strong. Sound isn't reduced by 90% the moment you turn a corner.

Maybe it is depending on what's going on. I turned a corner from my room to the kitchen while something was playing and the sound was muted quite a bit.

 

It's like some people though that Frostbite Engine can't keep up with audio mixing because when there's lots of gunshots and explosions, ambient sounds go away. Except this was a clearly stated feature because well, those things are really loud and foot steps are really quiet.

Im currently on the second chapter, about half way through it (I've just blown up marcuses greenhouse) and that's all it has been from the start of the game. 

 

On topic the audio is pretty fantastic, I had noticed the occlusion and dynamic effects depending on which environment without knowing anything about this technology so it certainly does make a difference to the game.

I can only imagine how immersive the audio would be if Microsoft had implemented this as well as TrueAudio Next.
