When I originally put together my rig with my i5-4460, I made sure to buy a Z97 motherboard so that in the future when I want more power, I can upgrade to a 4790K or the like and not have to switch platforms. I'll be using the extra power mainly for video encoding and rendering. However I've had several people now suggest that when I upgrade I go with a Xeon instead. Would that be a good choice? If so, could someone recommend a specific one? Thanks.

A Xeon that has the same performance is worth it when:

1) It costs less

2) You do mission critical things

I'd say get a used Xeon when Kaby Lake comes out. Companies will most likely upgrade their systems and these chips will go cheap. Keep an eye on that.

If you can, buy a 4790K. It offers better performance than Xeon E3s which are the only compatible Xeon CPUs on socket LGA 1150

the only reason i'd recommend a xeon over that 4790k in this specific case (already having z97) would be that 4c/ht xeons are generally cheaper than an i7, but i feel like the price difference between them, compared to the performance jump over an i5 4460 kinda puts xeon out the question either way.

I think the E3-1286v3 is the closest in performance with the 4790K but theyre very expensive. I would reccomend the 1231v3 as it is like a 4770. A tad bit slower but a much better price.

i currently am running a xeon and i love it. My whole pc was $120 and beats $500 pc's easily. if you can afford a core i7, go for that. If not, then xeons are a great option. hope i could help!

Want V-Pro?

That's one difference between a Unlocked CPU and locked i7...

What...the 4790K doesn't have V-Pro and neither does the 6700K.

None of the unlocked i7s never had V-Pro...

Locked i7s do have V-Pro, but not unlocked.

Are you mainly gaming? If so I would go with the i7 since you can OC it to 4.0 safely. If it's more of just a workstation/web browser computer go with a Xeon for economics. Eaither way I would wait for Kaby Lake's to drop for further savings on previous gen chips/MoBo chipsets.

An e3 xeon isn't more reliable then a consumer i7, they just have ecc support.

I need the extra power for video encoding and rendering, but I'll be gaming as well. And yeah, I was planning to wait till Kaby Lake and maybe even Zen so prices drop.
