Will my ram bottleneck my GPU

Go to solution Solved by manikyath,

just gonna dissect this bit by bit, show this to your broski to -in detail- show him how wrong he is:

get 32gb of ram

32GB ram is expensive, it is mostly expensive because no one needs it.

16gb will hinder the performance of my gtx 1070 by a lot

1: it wont

2: where did he even get this information from?

16gb of Ballistix Sport 2400mhz

sounds good to me. honestly just get whatever 1x16 or 2x8 kit you want :P

28 minutes ago, Kavaton said:

windows and other things will leave only around 4gb of ram left

WHAT THE F*CK are these "other things" that they take up 10 gigs of ram (because windows 10 itself will gladly do with 2GB for itself)

besides, empty ram is wasted ram, so windows and some other applications will scale their ram usage accordingly to speed up, and release ram as needed.

my (pretty bloated) "idle" usage is ~7GB out of 16GB, and probably half of that is well... bloat xD

(EDIT: should probably add that my "idle" usage is also gpu intensive enough to make it clock up above idle clock :D)

28 minutes ago, Kavaton said:

the speed won't be able to keep up with the ram in the 1070

completely unrelated. not even gonna get into this. also, "ram in the 1070" does he mean vRAM? because that's fast for other reasons :P

28 minutes ago, Kavaton said:

therefore making it underperform

look at any benchmark ever and what ram they use...

Is this true or is he completely wrong

- grab a sock

- open his jaw

- stuff the sock in it.

EDIT: please tell me that this didnt give you 7 "quoted" notifications, if it did, sorry :P

I'm going to be ordering my pc parts in a few days, yet my brother is telling me to get 32gb of ram, saying that 16gb will hinder the performance of my gtx 1070 by a lot, I'm getting 16gb of Ballistix Sport 2400mhz. He's saying windows and other things will leave only around 4gb of ram left and that the speed won't be able to keep up with the ram in the 1070, therefore making it underperform. Is this true or is he completely wrong.

No, 8Gb is enough for most tasks (I would still get 16 though).

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

Your brother is wrong.

16GB is generally the recommended amount of RAM for the average PC. You're not going to require 32GB.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

He is so misinformed it's not even funny.

Where did he get than info? Even with only 8GB of RAM, I can have 8 chrome tabs, two games and a variety of other programs open without filling it completely.

i'd probably change a few things, but that's my opinion. dropping the agree here :P

(i'd get a tower cooler instead of liquid, go for an i7, and a smaller SSD most likely :D)

I agree, but it is all subjective things and there is probably valid reasons for and against.

I don't really think I need an i7 seeing that it only increases frame rates by 5-15 and I'm mainly getting the kraken x62 because it looks dope af

there's the difference between you and i :P

- i *need* an i7, i'm such a cpu hog before i'm even at my game xD

- i dislike watercooling, and my pc lives under a desk so i wouldnt see the "dope AF" either way xD

the cpu side of things also hugely depends on the kind of games you'll be playing, if you're going for the gpu heavy titles an i5 is plenty, if you're someone who tends to go for the cpu heavy titles (we're talking minecraft and cities:skylines on my end to name two big ones :D) that i7 can make a notable difference, especially if there's background stuff going on as well.

I'm gonna have it on my desk inside the matte white s340 elite, also getting a white backplate with a tiger head on it for the gpu (from coldzero) and white psu extension cables. (black and white theme if you haven't noticed). I'm mainly gonna be playing games like DOOM, GTA, The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, CS GO and stuff like that, which don't benefit greatly from an i7, but hey, I might upgrade in a year or two if I feel it's necessary :)

sounds all okay there :P

csgo is pretty much margin of error after two cores, and afaik all others have graphics settings high enough to make that 1070 do some serious work :P

GTA 5, fallout 4 and Witcher 3 are CPU intensive and would benefit from an i7.

From what I've seen with benchmarks, witcher only gets around an extra 5-10 same with gta, fallout 4 is all over the place. But yeah 5-10 frames isn't worth an extra 100 pounds to me personally
