Posted October 18, 2016 Recently I've been looking into getting a mechanical keyboard for productivity/ gaming, but as I've been fine with my current laptop keyboard (An MSI 17 inch steelseries keyboard) I haven't seen much of a need. Would it be worth using a mechanical keyboard while at home, or should I just stick with the laptop's built-in keyboard which is quite nice and has good travel for a laptop keyboard? If you have any suggestions for entry level mechanical keyboards, or would like to share your preference on switch type, that would be useful for me in deciding. Thanks, Cutout. Oh, also, my only experience using a mechanical keyboard is on my old TRS-80 model 3 which I assume considering how old it is will be very different from a modern mechanical keyboard. Posted October 18, 2016 Most keyboard starts at 50 dollar or more. There are some switches allowing you to test. This covers everything basically

Posted October 18, 2016 If you like your keyboard you have now, I'd just stick with it. I have an MX Red keyboard and I prefer the keyboard on my ultrabook for typing sometimes. As for switch type, this is hugely, hugely personal preference. You'll really have to explore this on your own. For example, I hate Blues. I find them obnoxiously loud. I had Browns, I found them too mushy. Not overly different from a good membrane keyboard. I like Reds for the most part, however find their travel a little on the long side. The MX Silver sounds like it'd be ideal for me. Red feel, shorter travel. Posted October 18, 2016 Mechanical keyboard switches are all own preference, I use a Corsair K70 with brown switches and I love them. You just gotta find the right switches for your use and what you like. Shortly explained Brown is between gaming / typing, Blue is more for typing and Red is considered for gaming. If you're gaming a lot I would recommend getting Black or Red switches but then again it's all own preference I use brown for both gaming and programming. Posted October 18, 2016 Author Are khail switches worth considering? They're generally cheaper than Cherry switches, but lots of people say they're lower quality as well. Anyone have any good information on that? I've seen some low priced khail keyboards with pretty good reviews.
 Posted October 21, 2016 Generally, red switches are for gaming, blue are for typing, browns are a good middle area. Go with Brown or Blues as your first one. I started with Browns, then went to Reds on my gaming rig and Blues on my family rig. Blues are nice, but the click can get loud/annoying at times, so I actually prefer browns. Posted October 21, 2016 I have Corsair RGB K70 with MX reds and I cant go back. Personally, I prefer browns but I don't want to buy another keyboard so I live with the reds. I would recommend picking the keyboard up on newegg or amazon here in a few months when Christmas sales hit. I got mine last year on amazon for 130$. anyways, Its a tough cost to swallow, but its worth it.
