Did water damage fuck my GPU ?

Go to solution Solved by ARikozuM,

GPU is likely fine, just disassemble the parts and clean, gently, with isopropyl alcohol.

4 days ago I spilled a glass of tea down my pc......

The pc was running and it quickly shut off by itself, I unplugged everything and dried it of with a hair dryer and some towels. I also took out the graphics card and RAM....

I come home after letting it dry for 3 days and try to get it working....

Everything powers on except the graphics card, I try with another graphics card and have no luck there either, I then reseat the RAM and all of a sudden It works.

All is fine for an hour while play GTA but when I exit them game the monitors turn off and the graphics card does the same, the rest of the system seems to be powered on.

I restart the system and everything works

The same happens 2 hours later while playing csgo with friends.

The rest of the night I have no problems.

But this morning when I tried to turn it on, the graphics card yet agian won't power on....

What the Fuck is going on here?

It's commonly called shorting out your PC with conductive liquid. I.E. you spilled water on your PC. :P

Sounds like something isn't dry or has some residue causing a short somewhere. All in all, it sounds more like your motherboard is shorting out. Reseating the RAM was the indicator there.

Kinda sounds like there is still something on the gpu causing the problem. Inspect the gpu to make sure there is nothing on it.

Motherboard sounds reasonable, since there were a lot of water on it for longest time.

I have a hard time, figuring out which part causes this. It seems it must be GPU,PSU or motherboard.

Clean them all. It doesn't hurt or take much time. You can literally just dunk some parts in liquid.

There's probably residue somewhere on the motherboard that will cause a short once things are heated up. To be honest, spilling tea then using a hair dryer sounds like a nightmare to me so the fact that you got the whole thing working even shortly is a great sign.

Take it all apart, everything. Use 100% Isopropyl alcohol with a q-tip and clean everything *very* gently. Be careful for any fiber left-overs. Did the tea contain sugar?

No luckily i didn't use any sugar, thanks alot of the tip ;)

Didn't realise hair dryers create static electricity at the time.

Yeah they do :) They can also get too hot if you aren't being careful. You can literally melt some components, lol. Sugar has killed keyboards for me in the past, that's why I asked. It's nasty and tends to stick on the circuits causing permanent shortages and needs to be manually cleaned.

I killed 2 Keyboards with sodas, and my current has survived 2 spillages.... She's a keeper ;)

Needless to say liquids and I don't get along very well.....

I know right? Haha, same problem. I simply made a rule to not keep any sodas on my desk, problem solved.

But yeah you learn from that... Nowadays if anything is spilled I just jump out of my chair like superman and quickly unplug the USB. I've saved 3 keyboards like that after putting them under tap water then rinsing with distilled water and letting them dry outside for couple days :)

You seem to tend to spill liquids over eletronics components often, lolll One pc 2 keyboards lol

Maybe you should try not to drink near ur pc !

Anyway, good luck with the cleaning I'm already surprised the pc still booting !

I had learned myself to place liquids in places they would not fall over, and if they would fall wouldn't damage anything...

Unfortunately i didn't know there were tea in the cup so i literally picked it up and turned it to the side...... I'm a genius.

I actually had water work its way between the CPU and mobo. So all the pins were wet. The PC would actually get to the login screen of windows and run for a few minutes. After the 3rd try I pulled the CPU out and found the issue real quick.
