Corsair XMP not working on MSI Z170A Gaming M7

Hi all :)

 

I've just finished building my own PC for the very first time and I'm having some issues...

 

My two 8GB sticks of 3000mhz RAM (Corsair Vengeance LED CMU16GX4M2C3000C15R) are only showing as 2133mhz in the BIOS/UEFI. I'm not overly clued up on this stuff, but I thought I could simply click the XMP button in the BIOS to 'ON' and that would bring them up to speed.

 

But it doesn't work, I get an error on reboot as pictured below. (Overclock failed)

 

My specification is:
Z170A Gaming M7 MOtherboard with 1.F BIOS Update.
Intel I7-6700K CPU.
Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVME SSD in slot M.2_2
Freshly installed windows 10 on the above drive.
No graphics card - MSI GTX 1080 on the way.
Antec 650w PSU.
Deepcool 240mm AIO CPU cooler.

 

My process for build was:
Install all parts into case.
Purchase genuine windows 10 and load onto USB via separate computer.
Power on the new build and enter BIOS.
Flash latest 1.F BIOS and reboot.
Turn on AHCI.
Install windows 10 onto Samsung 960 Pro.
Download all drivers from MSI website onto usb and individually add them all via device manager. Download Samsung NVME driver and installed that.

 

So far I've tried running one single stick in slot #2, then enabling XMP. This works. If I have only one stick in slot#4, I get the same error of Overlock failed.

 

Can anybody help please?

Did you buy 2 kits of 8 or 1 kit of 8?

Just keeping this here as a Thanks for the reply, Before installing windows 10 I flashed the latest 1.F BIOS.

 

I've also tried doing the overclock timings manually without XMP enabled, and I get the same error on booting.:( Really disappointing as I feel like something isn't quite working properly...

I bought one kit of 16GB (Two 8GB sticks).

 

I've been having another mess with it...I turned XMP on, and In one of the menus I selected 2900mhz. Then upped the dram voltage to 1.4v. There's a unit of measurement to the left of that which seems to fluctuate around there and just over (1.402v).

 

Booted up OK, and currently running a memtest thing.

 

I'm just concerned as to why a single stick won't work in slot#4 with XMP enabled at 3000mhz, but yet it will work in slot#2. I just wish the XMP could be turned on with ram in slots #1 and #2 and that was it.

 

While I'm here, is 1.4v considered high for the dram?

No 1.5v is the highest I would go

Cheers guys, that's good to know.

 

Any thoughts on why simply enabling XMP causes the overclocking failed message? When I enable XMP with no other changes, I notice it sets the ram voltage to 1.35v.  

 

Any thoughts on whether or not my slot#4 is an issue? I assume it should work exactly the same as slot#2?

What slots are the ram in now? While I'm not familiar with that specific mobo, I do have two of MSI Z170A gaming pro. The manual recommends two sticks of ram goes in slots 2 and 4 (counting starting nearest CPU) which gives dual channel operation. Alternatively, use slots 1 and 3. Don't know why 2 and 4 are preferred over 1 and 3. Any other combination will probably disable dual channel mode and you halve your bandwidth potential.

 

Were both sticks tried individually in slot 2 when XMP was working? Just to rule out having a bad stick from new. It does happen.

Thanks for the reply...Yeah, both are currently sat in slots #2 and #4.

 

And I did indeed try both sticks individually in slot #2 with XMP. It worked perfectly fine. But when I tried both sticks individually in slot #4 i got the failed overclock message with both sticks.

 

I'm currently running something called memtest after having enabled XMP, but then set the speed at 2900mhz and applied 1.4volts to the ram. No errors so far and the test has covered 500% or so...

 

Thing is I'm a bit of an OCD perfectionist and the fact that it doesn't just work on XMP alone, and more so slot#4 individually won't work with XMP when slot#2 will...is bugging the crap out of me:(

 

I just feel like something isn't right somewhere...possibly with slot#4?

If one stick works, and two does not..then you just got unlucky with the "Silicon Lottery."

'Skylake' is only *officially* rated up to DDR4-2133.

Anything above WILL require overclocking of the Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) inside the CPU -- especially when you are trying for DDR4-3000.

As with overclocking anything, let is be graphics card or CPU, the speed you want to reach is not 100% guaranteed.

Saying you want to reach DDR4-3200 does not mean you will.

 

JJ from ASUS made a video explaining this on the Z97 platform, but the information STILL applies to Intel's latest, or even AMD.

It isn't just the IMC. I once moved a 6700k and 2x4GB Corsair 3000 from an ATX mobo to a mini-ITX one. I knew it worked fine with XMP in the 1st board, but it just wont boot on the 2nd. Lowering the ram clock allowed it to boot. It must be the mobo trace layout or something. Basically, I find there is a risk of incompatibility once you get to around 3000 or so regardless what compatibility is claimed by the mobo or ram makers, and swapping with different modules can make a difference, otherwise you just have to back off.

Thanks for that, it helps me understand what's going on a little more. So basically I need to find a setting to increase the output (Voltage?) of the IMC in the UEFI? It just concerns me that slot#2 with nothing else populated is fine, whereas slot#4 populated with nothing else doesn't work. I guess I'm asking if my MOBO is faulty or not? Or is it the way this just works?

What I am saying is, 3000 MHz may too much for the IMC to handle -- your overclock limit is below 3000 MHz.

You can try increasing the voltage and tweak the timings a little bit, and see if you can get 3000 MHz on two sticks, but don't go crazy on it.

 

The more RAM slots you occupy, the more strain you put in the IMC.

That is why one stick worked at 3000 MHz, but two didn't.

Instead of managing on thing, you now have to manage two.

 

If all else fails, you might just have to settle with something below (e.g. 2800 MHz, or custom overclock...say 2880 MHz)...or test your luck with buying a different i7-7600K.

(Intel won't accept RMA's when a CPU does not overclock to your expectations -- it's not technically defective)

(Intel won't accept RMA's when a CPU does not overclock to your expectations -- it's not technically defective)

 

 

Sorry man, but there is no way that a 6700k IMC can't handle 3000 MHz RAM.  Skylake's IMC is the best there is at the moment and will handle 3000 MHz without even braking a sweat.  Hell, 3000 MHz is a walk in the park for HWE or BWE, which have far pickier IMCs than Skylake.

 

You have a far higher chance of receiving defective RAM or motherboards than receiving a Skylake chip that won't do 3000 MHz.  That's not to say that the IMC can't be bad on this particular chip, but it's so unlikely that he should exhaust all other means first.

 

@Volksdevil, you're better served focusing energy on the memory itself or the motherboard.  @Lays is pretty good with Skylake stuff so maybe he can chime in and give you a hand.  That's if he's not too busy dreaming about his own 6700k.

But just to clarify the above. It (XMP) doesn't work when I use only one stick of RAM in slot #4. That's where my concern is because If I use one stick in slot #2, it does work.

 

So is my slot #4 faulty? Or is the way it's traced/wired to the CPU/IMC causing that variance between slot #2 and slot #4 when using them on their own?  

 

Regards the CPU itself, I had a play with the Game boost (Built in OC) and set it to 4.7ghz no problem. I haven't tried any other CPU overclocking as yet because this RAM issue is bugging the hell out of me.

 

Just to add to this as a similar issue, it seems ASUS Z170A users are having a pretty widespread issue with XMP when using corsair ram. But! I can't find any mention of anybody saying that ONE individual slot is the issue like I have. Link on Corsair forum

In that situation, there may be a chance the problem is with your  Z170-A board then...

Since your GTX 1080 have not arrived yet, I don't know if the iGPU is causing any quirks with your DRAM trying to run at 3000 MHz via XMP.

 

You've tried 2900 MHz, and that works on all four DIMM slots?

Have you tried 3000 MHz in slots #1, #2, and #3?

If slot #4 is the only one that doesn't work...hmm...

OK, More testing done...

 

Using one stick of RAM i got the following with XMP (@3000mhz) turned on:

 

Slot 1 - Booted fine.

Slot 2 - Booted fine.

Slot 3 - Failed overclock.

Slot 4 - Failed overclock.

 

So...Rather than specifically being a slot 4 issue, it looks like more of a channel B issue?

If I do bring the clock down to 2900mhz, and 1.4v DRAM all slots work fine.

 

Added some pics just in case anybody can spot anything, I notice that there are some differences in numbers between channel A and B. See red arrows on pic. Is this normal or?
