I haven't had a printer for ages and haven't really needed one for awhile till recently. My cousin wants to get me one as a gift for Christmas or possibly black Friday gift (I think it's secretly to fuel her coupon obsession... :P )

Last printer I had was some HP unit back when I was still in high school. So, which printer, LTT? Doesn't have to be uber fancy since hurr durr coupons and random documents. Budget is up to $50 and this is going to be local pickup at Frys. Which printer is decent enough and doesn't have crazy expensive ink carts?

It's actually, in most cases, cheaper to buy a new $30 printer every time you run out of ink. The printers come with ink and refills can cost an arm and a leg.

Buy a cheap printer, and buy a new one every time ink runs out.

Seriously. It's cheaper.

I've noticed that..for the $30 printers, the recommended replacement carts are about as expensive as the printer itself. The waste of buying multiple printers to save money is funny because it's kinda true.

Anything from Epson, HP or Canon that fits that price range. If there's multipurpose ones available, go for them. Having scanner is pretty useful for making backups from receits and other important papers. Basic bw/color laser would be better but I guess prices on those are more towards $100 mark.

If you can do without color +1 on a basic b/w laser printer.  If not Id look at inkjet.

@ixi_your_face, you mean like this http://www.amazon.com/HP-DesignJet-Printer-C7780C-ABA/dp/B000067TRD? Why not get a scanner while at it http://images.getprice.com.au/products/BimgContex%20SD4430.jpg. Scanner is right next to me and printer across room :)

I wouldn't support such waste by buying printer every time ink runs out. Another thing with cheap printers is quality of print. For just plain text, maybe some basic pics its ok, but if you really need pics to look good some extra is needed. Besides good printers use less ink than those cheap ones. And there's things like refilling cartridges or buying non-brand ones. Like my retail ones are 15€ but non.branded only half of that.

True, but also not realy,

The ones you get with the printer are obviously not as full as others you actualy buy,

However ye they are crazy expensive for what it contains.
