Why does God in his infinite wisdom choose to temp me so? I noticed today, NCIX and Newegg have 7970's on sale for as much as $150 bucks off. Pity the suckers that bought them last week. :)

Now, thinking of this from a purely Folding perspective and nothing else (disregard Crossfire issues, game performance, etc) it almost makes sense to sell a GTX 780 and get two 7970's. For the price of the GTX 780 used, I can probably cover both the new cards, maybe minus $50-75 bucks, But then, I could have the potential to output over 200K PPD on this sucker...

Oh, and don't get a new AMD card yet and expect to fold. They are failing - the gpu.txt whitelist has not been updated...

I would buy two and wait till the sale ends then sell them for $10 less than the price of a new one.

@Whaler_99 You could always pick one up to check out the Mining side of this forum ;)

If you were to get 2 of them, you'd get 6 free games from the never settle bundle to re-sell or give away. Depending on which cards you get (some have issues with mining and require changing the bios) you can get 750 khash per card totaling 1.5mhash. Right now (always changing) you could mine 1.4 LTC per day.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I seem to have one of those addictive personalities. :) Anyone noticed yet? Anyways... I have thought about getting into this - I just honestly have no faith in the digital currency solution as it stands, my own personal thing. SO for now, I FOLD! :)

will be selling my 7970 for either a 290x or a pair of 280x (yes I know its a 7970 but I want the updated Asus cooler and I already have someone willing to buy my reference card for $280 so I'm willing to pay $30 for matching cards with a better cooler and power delivery.)

I went the dual 7970 route on my recent graphics upgrade and have not been disappointed.  Folding was the primary objective and gaming secondary.  I got two of the Sapphire non-gigahertz edition cards.  They run pretty cool(under 60 C) and produce about ~170k points on an average day and ~190k on  a good day.  I upgraded from two 560Ti cards and would say that the AMD drivers and control center have been buggy but that hasn't seemed to impact folding.

like the cooler design of those cards, just don't like the blue PCB and the fact that no one makes water blocks for those. I want to water cool eventually so water blocks are a must for me.

This is one of the problems with the newer AMD cards - as there are no "reference" designs for some. I recently saw a review of three R9 280x cards and all three had different PCB's, which will make getting water blocks for them a REAL pain.

I would wait till water blocks are actually available and certified for X, Y and Z models and then make your purchase based on that.

right but all of the rebrands are the same PCB of the equivalent PCB from the last gen so the water block that would have worked on the 7970 windforce card still fits this one and such. The only 280x card that I know doesn't have a water block yet is the one with the updated DCUII cooler, but I talked to EK and they're already working on one.

I upgraded my 660ti to a 7970 Matrix Platinum when it was on sale for £250, cheaper than the DCUII 680. :P

Although I cannot get the 7970 to fold...

Try mining Litecoin with it? ;)

It seems to be OK now, all works perfectly. Left it, went to bed, woke up and it works fine. :)

Just doing some testing before I put the 3770k that I have sat next to me in my rig this afternoon, upgrading from a 3570k. :)

Don't expect a huge PPD boast from a 3570k to a 3770k - as though HyperThreading cores don't add a lot. My 3570 clocked at 4.6Ghz out perform my 3770

I wasn't really. I bought it more as an upgrade for 3D rendering/video editing.

I'm going to make a post on some benchmarking I've done today on a variety of software, with notes and a slight (moderate) review/conclusion. Nothing TTL worthy... :P
