Building A New Server

I am on a Robotics team for school and we need to build a server for running CAD. We are going to run AutoDesk Inventor Professional 2016, Solidworks 16, and Matlab. We will run 5-6 separate instances instances off of the server. What kind of CPU, GPU, and operating system would be a good choice. This server is intended to teach students how to use these programs. This is for a private school so we don't have to big of a budget.  Willing to listen to anyone's advice!  I can further explain anything that i can to help.

a Xeon E5-1650 seems like a solid CPU for this 6 cores 12 threads at 3.8GHz for LGA 2011 and then for the GPU i dont know how relient on GPU autodesk is but a 1070 maybe? not sure how you would share that single GPU tho so maybe get a few 970s or something, im not good at server stuff

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

How about laptops or all in ones. A dell 7559 is about 800 are not a bad deal

 

Your not going to have good luck with multipoint/vms.

Also if you going to do a remote desktop thing, buy something like a dell wsye thin client. There built for this are much better than most other solutions(steam inhome streaming)

We can't put 5 computers anywhere. We are mounting the server on the ceiling. The screens are on the wall. the keyboards are removed and placed in storage when the server is not in use. How could I use a GPU with multipoint? Could I use a 1070 split between 3 users with multipoint?

Those a are laptops. You can put them any where. If you want it wall mounted, id buy a all in one. For basic use, you can run cad software on almost anything.

 

You can slpit it with multipoint, but you have to have windows server(about 500 bucks). Id suggest against it.

Here is what you need to achieve that: 5 VMs, 5 instances of windows (student version is free), 5 instances of Inventor, Solidworks and Matlab (student version is free I think), one hypervisor (unraid, ESXi).

Hardware-wise you will need at least 24 threads (more will be better), at least 64 gb of ram, at least 5 GPUs (1 for passthrough/ 1 for each VM), at least 6 ssds, a case to fit all that and a psu to power all that.

Now some other notes on the subject. If you are going to use the Autodesk stuff for educational purposes (light objects) I guess you can get by with cheaper GPUs lets say GTX 950s for example. On the other hand you will have to spend big on the CPUs+MOBO. All and all this is my proposal (+ 4 more 950s)

Get 5 SSDs per client, and 5 980tis per user as they have more CUDA cores then a 1080 so they are faster at non gaming related activities. I doubt you would use more then 6gb too. Then you could get a single 20 cores Xeon or 2 10 cores to give each user 4 cores.
