Is one CPU enough? Also the specs for Autodesk recommend a CPU of at least 3.3 Ghz. Would that Xeon do.

How are there going to be 5 users? VMs? Mulitipoint?

Id personally just get 5 systems

That's just all sorts of a terrible idea not to mention you're missing a motherboard.

@majorjoel2 - What operating system did you want to use and how did you want to purchase that?

(P.S I work in gov/edu enterprise & networking presales - this is something I regularly quote :P)

We plan on using Multipoint if it works with gtx 1070s. We plan on spliting two for the 5-6 multi points. Do you know if that works We might be able to get the multipoint license from the IT guy at our school.

Majority of virtual solutions require a dedicated GPU per instance, or a really expensive GPU that is designed to be shared. Not a route I would go personally - also would be more work administratively.

Somebody suggested multipoint, that may be a good solution. For general tasks it's a great solution, I just can't speak on how it will do in this scenario. You could also buy some Intel sticks to RDP in, little easier to handle than a thin client. Not sure how deep down the rabbit hole you're willing to go.

Regarding the laptop solution, you could just mount them to the wall beneath the monitors... They will run perfectly fine vertically. I'm sure mounted they wont stick out anymore than the monitors. I think this would be the best solution, less to manage. Sharing a server could be a nightmare waiting to happen. Get a clever student who thinks they're an IT professional and you'll find yourself re-imaging the server lol.

So is there no way possible I can use two 1070s? Even if the server is kept away from people that you mentioned.

If you use multipoint you can use a single 1070, and if you use two you'd just SLI them (is the possible on the new ones?). Otherwise I don't know how to tell the software to balance between the two though it may be possible. I'm just unsure of how well it will all perform with multipoint, but it would work.

Do you have a gaming computer by chance? You could install multipoint (eval) on it and test it out. Maybe a student has a gaming machine they're willing to test with. I believe server 2016 now includes multipoint as a feature/role so you dont need a separate version, but you could still install it as an eval if you go with 2012.
