Need a upgrade for 1440p? Which 1440p montior? which GPU?

Hey guys,

Would i be able to do 1440p gaming on a GTX970 or would i need a new gpu? and which gpu and/or monitor would be recommened?

I would like to be able to get over 60Hz but if a cheaper opition for hundreds of dollars less is avalible then ill take it haha

U won't notice anything over 60FPS with a 60Hz monitor. If you specifically want fast fps at 1440p say at something like 144HZ you'll need a 1080 at least. A good 1440p 144Hz monitor is the Pixio.

I dont think their are any cheap 60hz+ 1440p monitors... But for 60hz a 1070+ should be fine, and maybe a 1060... For 100hz+ I would def recommend a 1080 though

This is best answer. 1070 performs great, the 1080 is 30% better performance, but its $250 US more. I went with the 1080, only because I am doing a 4k build. But for 1440p with 144hz you should be golden with a 1070, especially with Gsync and VR.

Off topic, but (assuming you have your build) hows the 1080 handling 4k for you?

It would work fine, but depends on your budget and if you want a little more "umph", like the ability to crank up settings or maintain high fps in certain games... But for just solid 1440p youd probably be fine with a 1070...

My recommendation for monitor: Dell u2715H

GPU....depends on the type of game you are playing. I am running a 980 and I am fine playing at 1440P on high settings and around 60fps. 

The RX 480 and GTX 1060 performs on par to the GTX 980....so...take that for what it's worth

I had the 970 and went to a 1080, again for a 4k build. The GTX 970 is a great card, but the 1070 is a much better value for 1440p 144hz especially as games get more demanding. Even the 1060 performs better than the 970, so if you don't want to go 1070 a 1060 is a good choice, you just may be swapping it for something else in a year.

Honestly I love it. There is a lot of salt out there right now because it averages 45-55 FPS with most titles on a 4k monitor (Not confirmed yet as I am running a 1440p setup and will be getting a 4k monitor very soon) but honestly I never really cared if my games went below 60 fps as long as it wasn't dramatic. Eventually I will do a SLI build with it which currently gets 80-90 FPS with maxed settings according to reviews, but till then I feel 45-55 frames is more then sufficient.

Nah I get it cause that card was almost $200 more 4 months ago. But Pascal is the future, and as new drivers become available I am sure the FPS and scaling power is only going to get better. If you are getting rid of the 970 then I would go 1070 because I feel it will be a solid card for the next few years, or just go all out with the 1080 if you want a 4k build instead.

it's mostly due to maxing out every game. at high settings it'll be a very good experience

If you are going with 1440p@60 I would keep the 970. I am currently running a 1440p monitor and a 970 strix and I'm getting along with a few cuts here and there and 60+ fps (e.g. BF1 open beta, High preset, 65 to 75 fps). In some games like Dirt Ralley the 970 hits its VRAM limit on higher frame counts, causing micro stutters. So I would recommend a GPU upgrade for everything beyond 60.

You can when you drop some settings down to high or medium (and even then, some times there isn't much of a difference). But going off the way its fairly easy to get over 3GB vRAM usage at 1080p, a GTX 1060/RX 480 8GB/R9 390/R9 390X would be better.

I'm using the ASUS GTX 1070 STRIX OC on the ASUS PG278Q ROG Swift and getting great performance. I've even had a few models of the 1080 that I've benched and chose to stay with the 1070 due to the price to performance ratio.

 

p.s. I don't need the, "why didn't you keep the 1080's?" questions pouring in. I stated my reasoning already.

Pixio Px277 is a good monitor. Gtx  1070 is a good card
