question about pci-express and rx480

Hello I got a question about the pci-express lane if it could affect the rx480.

Because I got a rx480 a few days ago and after plugging in it the pci-express port and plugging in the 2*6 to 8 pin, my computer wont boot.

The keyboard lights(numlock)don't light up and the HDD light indicator isn't on.

I tried again with my old GPU and the pc booted fine.

I also tested it with a 750W PSU and it still didn't work.

Its also now a faulty card because my friend tested it on his rig and it worked fine.

So maybe it is the pci-express 1.1 port that does that?

 

Specs:

Cpu: Intel core I5 3470

RAM: 6GB

GPU(old): Nvidia GT630

PSU:  Seasonic S12II 520W V2

MOBO: some random generic prebuilt mobo

The slot you're trying to use should not be PCIe 1.1.

Yes it will.

PCIe is backwards and forward compatible with every generation.

It is. But I don't think the slot is PCIe 1.1.

Though I will admit that it's possible that AMD's newer cards don't work with PCIe 1.1 due to performance constraints it would ensue.

Those should work just fine with the unit.

Are you using an adapter with the 750W unit, and was your friend using the adapter?

the 750 didn't need a 2*6 to 8 pin

but the 520w needed it

I don't think there was ever a motherboard that could hold i5 processors and have less than pci express 2.0

The pci express lanes of the video card come straight from the processor, so all support at least 2.0 or 3.0, depending on what Intel cpu you have.

 

I think you were confused by the dynamic adjustment of the bus most video cards have these days, to save power.  The video card will automatically switch between pci-e 3.0 if supported, or pci-e 2.0 if 3.0 is not supported (think amd am3+ boards that only know pci-e 2.0) and pci-e 1.1 to save power.  They also switch from x16 to x8 or even x4 when there's no need for lots of bandwidth (for example when you're just watching a video full screen or something like that), again to save power.

 

In your case, if you plugged the extra power correctly, the video card should work just fine. Maybe, just maybe there's some kind of bug in the BIOS of your motherboard, check the manufacturer's website to see if there's any updates.

Try moving the video card in another pci-e slot.

If your i5 has integrated video and the motherboard has video output connectors, take out the rx card, go in bios, disable the integrated graphics, reboot and turn off the pc, plug the rx card back, and turn on the pc..

I dont think it's possible that a mobo that holds an i5 3470 is PCI 1.1.

I have seen people even run GPUs in PCI-E slots that was not even long enough to fit the GPU... :P

This is false, all generations of PCIe are backwards compatible. A PCIe 3.0 card will run all the way down to PCIe 1.0. Interestingly enough, most (but not all) PCIe controllers (switches) are also backwards compatible, which allows you to place a PCIe 1.0 card in a PCIe 3.0 slot, for example.


What length is the slot that you are trying to put the card in? What size is your PSU?

Unfortunately there is no bios update for the prebuilt I have....

So I think the only solution I have is to get a new MOBO
