Hello guys,

I currently have a gtx 1070 and an a10-7850k with an MSI A78m-e35 and i really need to upgrade the apu and motherboard. What do you recommend in terms of upgrades? I just want to game, so no video editing or anything. I know that AMD is focusing on ZEN and the benchmarks look really promising, but I just wonder who ZEN is aiming at. I saw about the 6core-processors, but i'm not willing to spend 400/500 euros on just a cpu and I wanted to know what ZEN will offer for gamers who normally buy an I5 or I7. Is it fine to go with a i7/i5 right now? I saw some rumors that the newer games will benefit from multiple cores so the I5 won't be a great option than, but i don't know if that is really the case. If you guys can recommend me a good upgrade, i would really appreciate it!

Thanks for your time!

Yeah just go for an i5/i7. Zen isn't going to be here for a while.

If it ends up being good, it will sell out quickly and get expensive. If it isn't good, you will end up buying an i5/i7 anyway.

i would go for intel and here's why,

1)last time amd had a architecture update the designer left and they keepet re releasing the same old architecture. now the guy that was behind zen left so i think its going to be the same thing and you wont have an upgrade path.

2)games work better with faster cores no matter what, even if they work with multiple cores better in the future i don't see them getting anything extra out of more than 4 cores (or just get an i7 for hyper threading)

3)to much of zen is up in the air until it comes out and is extensively tested.

@Lilithty First thanks for your reaction. Do you think going with an i5 6600k will be a wrong choice for the coming 2/3 years? I just don't want to upgrade in 10 months because the 4 cores aren't good enough anymore to run every game at good settings

Ok, firstly the "rumors" of games that benefit from more cores is incorrect: with DirectX 12 ALL CPUs will have benefits, ALSO multi core CPUs, which mean that pretty much everyone will have a benefit.
As for the CPU, I will say that with Intel you know you're getting something good right now as in the future; with AMD right now I see no reasons why you should get one, in the future MAYBE their processors will be a good value, but who knows for which "level" (low, mid or high range). If you're willing to wait at least one year (for the release plus price stabilization and testing from a lot of people of the performance) you're probably going to have the choice between Zen and Kaby Lake.

4 cores are enough (in a good way only) for gaming. Even with DX12 more than that are not going to be really useful unless you're recording / streaming while gaming. That being said, the 6600k is one of the best (if not THE best) value CPU you can get.

it all depends on if you are willing to wait for Zen and Kabylake to release. right now a good gaming CPU would be the 6600K paired with a good cooler and a nice Z170 motherboard(dosent have to be nice, only affects overclocking with powerphases and shit, ASRock boards are fine IMO) we dont know the pricing of Zen CPUs because they are not out but seeing Zen preform(verry slightly) better then Broadwell-E at the same clocks i would say that Zen is looking promessing and i might get one but ALWAYS WAIT FOR REVIEWS and benchmarks befor buying a CPU, GPU, harddrive or game, dont buy before you know exactly what you are getting for your money

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Also don't pin yourself on DX12. Results will still vary from game to game, and what about current DX11 games that is the current major market. And also for the CPU making use of it, this also goes hand in hand with how well the gamecreators set it up. Granted that this might be done better then the dual GPU support, but still would not always bet on it.

I hope Zen will be great and puts it back into competition with Intel, but expecting it to be on par with current skylake is already a big if, let alone better then at release compared to the then current gen Intel. As with GPU's it likely will be a catch up, but don't expect the world realistic speaking. What Zen will bring for gamers we can't answer properly yet until release. Looking good benchmarks don't tell a story at all for now.

Since you mention you need to upgrade now, Intel it is I say. The 6700K is the best of the best for gaming, but a step down to an i5 is for most also good enough. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

True about patience. But untrue in this case for waiting. There is always something upcoming that might be better in PC world. This is not like 1 month orso but probably 2017. Would not wait that long because by then Intel might come up with something new and so the cycle repeats.

yeah but amd has not come in with a new line of processors in years and i think it would be good just to wait to see what they come up with and while it is true that you shouldn't wait for a long time for parts to come out i think this is an exception

depends. i mean personally its pretty unlikely that the zen will peform better than skylake i mean at best maybe on par with skylake and thats a big if. we just have no idea. not to mention its a while till it releases and even then you would ant to wait till people have tested in and posted reviews until getting one so it could a be alot longer than your willing to wait.

right now 4 cores is more than enough and i don see that changing any time soon. remember its not just cores its also individual core speed. thats why intel performs generally better than AMD despite many AMD processors having more than 4 cores. so a 6600k would be great for gaming right now and should be able to last for a good 2-3 years unless something drastically changes not to mention if you get a decent motherboard you can overclock it. or you could get the 6700k which has hyperthreading if your that worried

4 cores is already low... cutting out hyper threading is a no for me. But I'm a pretty big enthusiast if I was going mainstream lineup then without a doubt I'd get a 6700k and nothing else, if you can hold off for a couple months you can get the 7700k instead on Kaby with the updated chipset, thunderbolt, USB 3.1, C.
