AMD and GloFo change WSA terms

You don't get it though.... it was already secured.... now AMD also has to down pay 335M dollars and face a new swath of potential penalties (although the severity of which is unknown).

This isn't bad in a vacuum, but it's terrible compared to the status quo.

isn't this just them updaating the WSA contract terms ? Like reinstating it ? They're not adding anything ?

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

No. They explicitly expect to take a 335M hit in Q3 finances as a result of it. And additional payment criteria as well.

Well the fact that AMD didn't get glofo to take responsibility for 14nm wafer shortages and the absolutely record low value of wafers AMD bought Q2 (less than half of Q1), means that it is quite likely the Polaris shortages in the US are patently AMDs fault for God knows what reason.

For the record I had been defending AMD for months about the issue because why the fuck wouldn't they keep trying to buy more if they were never available in arguably the biggest market in the world. This just doesn't make sense AMD.

And the contract makes it very expensive for AMD to outsource fabs, yes?

This just seems like a case of AMD getting played with by their owners / GloFo

Well we don't know how expensive, but clearly it's going to be non-trivial.  It does seem like a conjob for a planned failure or something.

I doubt that, as FinFets are very different from planar. 20nm would have worked fine too, if it had FinFets instead of planar. After all, the reason why Intel could get their 22nm to work, was because of FinFet (Trigate). At the end though, it's pure speculation where Intel/GloFo/Samsung will be in a year or two.

As for the topic at hand, I still see this is a good deal, so idk why it's being portrayed as something bad.

It's right in the published numbers for the foundries. Very little density improvement, but plenty of power and switching speed improvement. It was exactly a repeat of Intel's 22nm.

Not really. They have tons of white papers out. Predicting where they'll be is child's play.

It's more expensive than it should be. AMD should have negotiated the ability to buy by the chip instead of by the water. That is how both Apple and Nvidia have their supply agreements set up with TSMC.

Probably all of them, and then Mudabala wouldn't be choking both sides of the business trying to keep it all afloat.

Jen Huang wanted to be the CEO of the combined company...in an acquisition not a merger.

So yeah that was never going to happen. People should let it go already.

In fairness I'm sure the people at AMD could have ruined Nvidia just as easily as they ruined ATI.

Ruiz brought forward the possibility and went to Nvidia first. He should have taken the deal. His incompetence is proof of that.

Which is an immature way to go about things. It's not about what the company leaders want. It's about what is best for the company and the shareholders. Businessmen in publicly traded companies who don't understand that only cause problems.

TBH, I've never seen AMD as a mature company, not with some of the whining its higher ups have done.
