How will this older GPU do for gaming at 720p?

trainergames

I have been looking around my local craigslist for a gpu set up for a budget gaming pc to use with my TV.

Well i came across 2 Sapphire HD 5970 X2 for $100 for both of them. I have messaged them and am waiting for a reply.

How do you think it will do when paired with e5450 overclocked to 4Ghz?

problem is I don't believe they are supported by amd anymore, but I'm not sure. If that's the case, crossfire won't work well with newer titles, and you need every bit of power you can get there. I'd look into that first.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I'd say you could play at 720p pretty well and perhaps some entry-level 1080p as well. Multi-card setups carry the risk of not working on some games, though.

720P? 5970 will crush 720P! though 1GB Vram may still be limiting if you go crazy with MSAA in a few games.

You will need to run latest games to get full GPU use from 4 GPU's, which is ok because 5870 can't run anything anymore at 1080P very well.

4 5870's in crossfire essentially will destroy 720P, just be careful with that 1GB Vram limit.

If you're looking for DX11 performance, go with anything newer. an older AMD 7800 series GPU will do waaay more than a 5970 could dream of. DX11 performance is atrocious on the Radeon 5000 series.

Honestly, if you have $100 to spend, just put in the extra $10 for a brand new RX 460. You could probably get a used 280x for that much too.

Oh thought it was a LGA 1366 Xeon.

I would still get 470 , more GPU power is more GPU power, newer games raise GPU power standards.

Not exactly sure of the specific reason but it is related to the recent update. It's supposed to stop once the database re-indexing has completed, when that is I don't know, or it could be a bug in the latest version of the forum software.

If you can barter than go for that, but 4 5870 gonna need serious power supply.
