This might be pretty difficult to make it work but I had a pretty cool idea.

Since GPU's are another form of processor in the form of an expansion card that interfaces with the PC via PCI express lanes.

What if intel, or AMD released a CPU expansion card? For example what if you wanted 2 extra cores for some extra rendering power? I might have to have its own dedicated RAM onboard, like GPU's do. But maybe they can make SO-Dimm (laptop memory) fit in there!

The he main argument you could make, I guess, would be that you can just upgrade your CPU all together. Well, you could but that's really just not efficient. You'll end up spending a lot more and there's not a huge market looking for used CPU's alone. Plus you might be able to get architectural improvements as well!

You ou could easily pop a cooler similar to GPU coolers on there as it is. But dang, that's gotta be pretty awesome:) it could also help remove a lot of the heat from one area. it wouldn't have the biggest market, but it would be pretty awesome.

i think this used to exist back when pentium 3's where a thing. correct me if i'm wrong, but i think those mobo's would allow for a simmilar card containing a secondary CPU to be installed.

EDIT: found it, they where slot 1 CPU's.

I was thinking something similar. I know(think) they used to have ram cards like that as I used to have one.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

I actually have one of those boards. Only one can be active at a time. I have another board that has 2 different types of RAM slots that could be used, but only one at a time.

It's called a coprocessor and intel already makes them.

Since PCIe is not capable of cross-wiring two CPUs together this card runs it's own OS, has its own ram, and runs it's own programs.

It does not join up with your CPU to add cores.

The only CPUs that can be stacked together are xeons and opterons, so your i5 or i7 or whatever cannot work with more than 1 CPU.

You have a really good idea and i believe that it can happen BUT you forget one big factor. The profit. Bying a brand new cpu is far more profitable for intel and amd than just buying an expansion card which could never be as expensive as a cpu.So here you have it my thoughts.

there are expansion cards far more expensive than cpus

Tesla P100 16 GB Vram will cost $9500

so this could be possible. intel even does this already
