Hey guys,

A bit of a noob question, but I am wondering how much of a benefit I will get from having games on my SSD (256GB) vs. my HD? I keep a very very clean PC so I have quite a bit of room on my SSD and I am thinking I can always keep 1 or 2 current games on there that I am playing and then it is easy enough to uninstall and add different games if need be?

this heavily depends on the games themselves. i used to have a 1TB WD Black, and Fallout 4 took ages loading on that. but now i only have SSD storage and Fallout is a lot quicker. in other games it might not matter a lot tho!

I put all games I'm currently playing on my 500GB SSD just to ensure any load times are minimized. Then once I've completed the game or don't plan on playing it again for several weeks, I cut-and-paste the game folder to my hard drive for storage. In the future if I decide to play the game again, I just copy it back to my SSD.

The only difference that will be made is the loading times. Games with a lot of loading screens (many Bethesda games, mainly Fallout and Elder Scrolls games for example) benefit highly from SSD's, while online games won't benefit from it. That is because in online games you will have to wait for the slowest loading player too.

My 512 Gb got full so I bought two 1 Tb Evo 840s and raided them, and now all my games load like ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

But its not necessary, but still if using HDD for gaming I'd setup a pair of drives in Raid 0 (I had that before switching to SSD).

Just dont put anything other than games or anything important on there, and back up your saves if you dont want to lose them and its fine.

This sounds like a good idea...

Putting games in the SSD can increase loading times.
BUT.. SSD has a limit for read and write..especially if u write a big sized file,so it will wear out faster if u keep adding and deleting games on it.
Though there will be no performance drop, SATA 3 offer 600MBps data transfer and its big enough for games.

SSD mean only for small data transfer like program or operating system.
Well if u are a billionaire like bruce wayne.. u can buy a lot of SSD.
but for me .. i use SSD only as Boot Device.
because its expensive as hell.

size of files or use of files has very little to do with it.. It's true SSD's degrade ovber time from writes, the scale of data that needs to be written to "wear out" the NAND is immense.

Reads do nothing to the life. So ideally you put stuff on that gets read allot.

OP

For games on SSD's. You will see no in-game FPS boost. The game will most likely load much quicker assuming a good system.

Open world games or games which load the environment on the fly (without loading screen) will transition between areas and such much faster and smoother.. so if you play something that has a tenancy to chug every so often (particularly as the environment changes) then it'll probably help that.

Otherwise there is little - no point in games on SSD.

Alright I will leave the games off of the SSD for now...just seemed like it takes awhile for Battlefield 4 to load

yeah my bad just delete the READ thing.. but my point is still correct.
it will degrade over time if u keep writing and deleting a data too often.

but once u finish the game.. u wont keep it forever in the ssd right?
so u have to delete it. since SSD is so expensive even for a small capacity i prefer storing the game in the HDD.

Technically yes but it takes HUGE amounts of data.. like many GB per day over years. NAND is not as fragile as was first believed

OP, stick a couple of games on the drive and see if you notice a difference.. or enough of a difference. Whats the point of a SSD bigger than ~60gb if your not gonna use it.

That said, it's not great to fill them totally :D

Yea guess I can throw them on the SSD...so for Battlefield 4 I can just move the folder from my HD to SSD?
