GPU tier list

MoonlightSylv

First of all, this is mostly based on what @STRMfrmXMN did with his PSU whitelist

This will be mostly comprised of current gen cards (Nvidia 900 700 series+ AMD Radeon R7/R9 300 200 series+ Current gen AMD A8 and A10 APUs)

This is an estimate, less demanding games might run just fine at higher resolutions with lower tier hardware, this is just a baseline recommendation for hardware. Lesser cards in a tier can be used in the tiers resolution but might not give you max settings 60fps+, you might need to turn down the settings for 60fps+ on lesser cards in a tier.

Tier 1: 4K+

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X (Pascal)
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080
  • AMD Radeon Pro Duo
  • AMD Radeon R9 390X2 (Devil 13)
  • AMD Radeon R9 295X2

Tier 2: Ultrawide 1440p/SLI or CF for 4K

Tier 2 SLI/CF for 4K does give you a better 4K

experience than tier 3 SLI/CF for 4k.

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X (Maxwell)
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 980Ti
  • AMD Radeon R9 Fury X
  • AMD Radeon R9 Nano
  • AMD Radeon R9 Fury

Tier 3: 1440p/SLI or CF for 4K

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB, Can't SLI)
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 980
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 970
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 780Ti
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 780
  • AMD Radeon RX 480
  • AMD Radeon R9 390/X
  • AMD Radeon R9 290/X

Tier 4: Ultrawide 1080P

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (3GB)
  • AMD Radeon RX 470
  • AMD Radeon R9 380X
  • AMD Radeon R9 280X (Higher end cards could be better than 380X)
  • AMD Radeon R9 380
  • AMD Radeon R9 285

Tier 5: 1080p

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 770
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 960
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 950
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 760
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti
  • AMD Radeon R9 280
  • AMD Radeon R9 270/X
  • AMD Radeon RX 460
  • AMD Radeon R7 370
  • AMD Radeon R7 265

Tier 6: 900p

  • Intel Iris Pro
  • Intel Iris 540
  • Intel HD 530
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 750
  • AMD Radeon R7 260/X
  • AMD Radeon R7 370
  • AMD A10 7850/60/70/90K
  •  AMD A10-7700K

Tier 7: 720p or lower

  • Nvidia GT series
  • AMD Radeon R7 250/X
  • AMD Radeon R7 240
  • AMD A8-7650/70k
  • AMD A8 7600K

If you feel one or more of the GPUs should be moved to a different tier or a GPU should be added, feel free to suggest that.

Tempting in near future to either get a 60Hz 1440p IPS monitor or 2x 1080p monitors. Don't feel like my 290 will last much longer at 1440p, 1080p though it'll last another year which would give me time to save for some big upgrades.

You could probably overclock it, depending on the games you play it could still be worth using.

I would suggest adding all the amd 200 series, and nvidia 700 series if you are going to include the 750ti and 270. And possibly a 720p category for igpus.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

1) I think since the 780/Ti are close in performance they should belong on the same tier.

2) I think the 770 belongs with the 960, similar perf

3) I'd love to see a 720p / 1080 Esports Tier with stuff like the R7 360, GTX 750, 730 64-bit, 260/X

The R9 285 and R9 380 are the same card. They shouldn't be split up. Also the R9 280x is faster than the R9 285/R9 380, list it higher up on the 1080p ultra wide list.

Nope. the 285 and the 380 are the same card. 380X is 20% more powerful.

It is not. The R9 380 is a slightly faster R9 285 and the R9 380x is a slightly faster R9 380

how do you rank them especially in the resolution categories?

is that like ultra settings on all games 60fps+

or just ultra settings on one specific game?

or is it like high settings playable?

are you basing this on some kind of a benchmark or is just from the top of your head?

also why are there like 3 different 4K tiers? Is the Tier 1 better at 4K than the Tier 2? Is the Tier 2 better at 4K than Tier 3? By how much? Why are they different?

I would shift everything down 1 tier -

Tier 1 should be borderline 4k

Tier 2 should be borderline 1440p

Tier 3 should be borderline 1080p

Tier 4 should be borderline 900p

Tier 5 should be merged with Tier 4.

That is how I would arrange it if I use 4xMSAA in games.

You wouldn't need 4x MSAA at 4K though.........

That's arguable, and it really comes down to how sensitive one is to jaggies. I find that 8x MSAA isn't enough at ~100 dpi (1080p at 21.5").

It's just a general recommendation for graphics hardware based on current benchmark results from different places. I'll clarify the 4K thing in the post.
