Help, I think I got a crappy psu D:

Hello Guys,

So, for my senior year of college, my father thought it would be cool to build a pc for me. Of course since we live in a small town and a Mirco center is 2 hours away, he went to best buy to get the parts but bought the base pc from ebay. The problem arises that he got a PSU that said on the box "400 Watt PSU" but on further inspection it actually is a 300 watt with peak 400 watts.The PSU I'm currently runing a PNY GT 730 2gb ddr3 for 720p gaming but would like to upgrade to something like a 950 for better performance. The 950 requires a 350 watt psu and I am wondering if I need to replace the psu which would really be a setback to my plans? My CPU is a i5 2500 with a max TDP of 95W, no cd bay, no wifi card(Ethernet for life), a 1 tera Hitachi hdd, and the aforementioned 730 which only takes 32 watts.

I got 332 watts on that calculator, but does that mean that it will work within safe operating perimeters of a peak 400 watt psu?

No matter what you should probably replace that psu... It sounds like a not so good unit and who knows, maybe one day it'll blow and take your whole system with it....

If you're looking into a new GPU check out the rx 460 which is coming out in 3 days. It'll cost around 100 bucks and my guess is it will deliver GTX 950 or so level performance while consuming less power. Even if it doesn't deliver its worth waiting to see.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Replace that PSU. That is priority number one. I had a similar crappy PSU, one that comes bundled with the case. Took my mobo+cpu down with it. Buy a good PSU.

Peak is totally unimportant, you only look at it's constant power output. Peak is for like a few seconds. I'd say you'd be fine with it if it were high quality, but since it's a bad PSU anyway I'd say it's very risky to put in the 950.

You should probably get a new one. Look at this 430W Seasonic. It's not the best, but Seasonic is reputable and it should be waaay better than generic stuff.

Thank you Guys for being so cool and not laughing at my modest build or asking me why Im being cheap not going to a 1060 or something, its nice to chat with ppl with realistic standards. My boyfriend is recommending This PSU, What do you guys think? If so tell me, if not, could I get away with a 750 ti instead?

Of course! Always understand that people have budgets or just don't want to spend that much on a PC :).

That's not a great PSU and 700W is way overkill, but it would get the job done with plenty of headroom. I'd still recommend getting a smaller PSU that's higher quality though if you have the money for it.

750ti I believe either uses the same or more power than the 950. Might be wrong though.

950 = 90, 750 ti = 60tdp

The Outervision calculator is a random bullshit generator. Please don't use it. It suggested that your system would demand wattage similar to that of an overclocked GTX 980 and 6700k.

To OP, yes, you need a new PSU. That thing is a firebomb. The PSU whitelist in my sig should help you out. An EVGA 600B or Corsair CX450M should work fine for ya.
