HTC Vive with i5-4460 and GTX 960

Hi (I apologise for CPU and GPU mention in the CPU section, I couldn't find anywhere else).

 

I tried out the Vive and I absolutely love it. I want one, really bad.

 

The only thing is, my system.

 

I got it custom built at the start of last year, and it has an i5-4460 and a GTX 960.

 

I know that the 'recommended' specifications for Vive is at least an i5-4570 with a GTX 970.

 

I'm wondering if my build will be able to run VR until I can afford to get a new PC, probably with a Skylake CPU and a 1080 (probably 2).

 

I don't care if I have to dial back the settings a bit in-game, if it means that I can play VR on my system.

 

Oh, and my system has 16GB of RAM so that shouldn't be an issue.

If you can afford a vive i would recommend upgrading before you buy one (IMO) but if you want to know whether it is capable then, yes in most games it will run just fine. I will also mention most games don't need their graphics settings to be adjusted because they will automatically tell what your system can handle.

I have an i5 4460 and R9 380X, my Oculus Rift DK2 works decently, I would upgrade eventually though

You CAN run it, but the 960 will struggle to hold stable fps, and you'll probably get a fair bit of low fps and stuttering.

 

I'd upgrade your gpu first before getting a vive, but just doing that should easily let you run it with a 4460.

Something like a 1060 or 480 should do well enough.

Just commenting here saying that since you have a completely different branded GPU it is kind of irrelevant and also your talking about a completely different product compared to the HTC Vive.

Okay, so I'll upgrade the GPU before I get the Vive, but the CPU should be fine, based on what you guys have said.

The CPU is the same, the headset is very similar, the GPU is only slightly better.
