Strong card + weak Physx car = Weak performance. Unfortunately, a slower PhysX card will actually slow you down rather than improve things.

Hello everyone, it's my first post on this forum! I know this is the CPU sub forum but I have a couple of questions that touches to a lot of subjects. 

 

I need help with my new build. I currently already own a GTX 1080, and I was pretty much disappointed by the performance of my card in Mirror's Edge Catalyst. With everything maxed at 2k res out I was averaging 80 FPS while Doom was rock steady at 144MHz.

 

So my first question is, would adding let's say a GTX 1060 dedicated for PhysX really help? 

 

If I add said card, how much PCI-E lanes would I really need? I'm planning to add an Intel 750 pro to my build.

 

Is 48 lanes even possible? I've seen the i7-6850k running up to 40 lanes. Would that bottleneck my 2 GPUs + Intel SSD setup?

I highly doubt that adding another card like the 1060 would help for PhysX. The system would change how many PCI lanes there are for each card though if you have the 2 GPUs and Intel SSD.

I don't think a PhysX Card would help, but a graphics card with an 8x PCIE Connection shouldn't bottleneck any modern graphics card
.

Not in catalyst it doesnt have physx

Nope everything is fine the 1080 is just a side step card. Getting another card for PhysX will do literally nothing. Like 8 games have it and it is implemented horribly.

Get another 1080 and SLI bridge, The performance almost doubles. Where as PhysX does almost nothing and never really works well.

A card dedicated to PhysX would actually NOT need a lot o PCIE lanes.  You could get away with 1x lane even.  PhysX is really just math.  I understand that this is counter-intuitive to how you guys think about most PC building, bandwidth = speed = frames, but that doesn't really work here.  Most GPUs need bandwidth because they are moving a tedious amount of scene data like textures and such.  PhysX and such is more akin to doing other calculation only jobs like cryptocurrency hashing and similar tasks.  While there's a lot of calculation being done, the data sets are actually very small and not demanding on bandwidth at all.  When GPU crypto was the thing, no one cared about PCI-e lane count, they put a GPU on every single slot to get the most out of a motherboard.  GPUs doing that kind of work have been found to take no hit to performance even running on 1x slots.  They just DON'T need the bandwidth.
