Anyone else here disappointed with the current pace of the industry?  I've had the same 5 year old machine (with a recently upgraded gpu...r9 290) and I would only see about a 10% performance increase if I built a new one (except maybe gaming).  I miss the days of double digit percent CPU speed increases!

I have a hard time believing you. Generally the CPU will gain 10% year over year. If your chip is really that old, then you'd get a whole lot more of a performance increase than you claim. Unless you're only looking at gaming. In which case it's completely dependent on the developer, not so much the hardware.

The industry didn't change much because 1)There isn't any big competition between companies; 2)people are happy with their systems; 3) there isn't motivation for the industry to push itself.

For example, let's talk gaming. pretty much any middle of the road system from the last 3 years handles 1080p 60fps just fine, there isn't much challenge on that area. High refresh rate monitors, 1440p, ultrawide, 4k and VR aren't being consumed as much, it's only see on small markets, over 90% of the PC gamers worldwide are either at 1080p 60hz or BELOW. 

So why would companies rush in to get that affordable high performance parts for better gaming experiences when almost no consumer is paying more than $200 for a display!?

IMO if we get affordable VR/Displays that go beyond the basic standard, then we might see hardware catching up.

I think GPU's are progressing satisfactorily, but CPU's are basically halted because AMD just hasn't done anything in years.

Either way, most of the products out right now just feel like stepping stones to the big advancements we're being promised next year.

The impression I (and most of the people I talked to, as well as many of the faces of the tech world) get from Zen is that it's going to bring good performance at a competitive price. Meaning enough of paying $250 for a good performing 4 core CPU, but instead having other options at lower price; and no $350 just for 4 hyperthread cores, but instead 8 promising cores; basically branching out from the "standard" intel set for their own products (which are the large marketshare).

The platform isn't supposed to be a paradigm shift regarding performance and high end systems, but instead a shift on what are most consumers buying.

that's a good thing, lowers prices of Intel and gives the consumer a better product. If AMD beats i7 6*** it'll lower the 6000 series as well as force Intel to make the 7000 series which is better than the AMD product.

What is funny with this statement is AMD could have patented the 64bit CPU witch would mean all CPU progress would have probably halted at the FX chip. Interesting situation that would have stopped the PC master race in its tracks. And Intel would be done for.

I don't agree, because AMD did what they could to get themselves more money. In doing so, they released the RX 480 a budget, high performance GPU (which turned out to be really good). Now that they're saying that they can release a cpu that runs power efficient and is cheaper than modern high Intel cpus, then I will believe them after what they produced

I don't think AMD is the sort of company that would do that. They seem to have a habit of developing things for everyone to use, rather than racing to control every technology they can to block out competition.

Eh, I consider the 480 to be a disappointment, but that's a topic for another thread. I want Zen to succeed and create some competition in a stagnant arena, and I really want Zen-based APUs to come out challenging the midrange discrete GPU lineup. I'd be a very happy man if I could buy a $300 processor that included graphics on par with even an R9 380.

Isn't that a consumer mentality of having the "need" to keep buying stuff each year because it's supposed to be better?

Putting computers aside, most of the consumers are supposed to be happy with their products, you buy a new car, AC, stove or a fridge and they serve you well for years. That doesn't mean the industry is not innovative, because on pretty much all products there is progression from R&D and scientific development which brings better commodities for human beings. People usually doesn't change these products often, because they are already satisfying a need; the fridge keeps the food safe and until it fulfills it's cycle as a product.

The logical reason to get new stuff is: Yours isn't achieving the demanded tasks as intended (not enough performance or damaged/broken) or you want to upgrade your commodity because the new one can do much more for you. Since personal computers became a thing people are always pushing them, and there are always tasks that show you the limits of the hardware, every time you have to wait for something to load/process, every time you have to manually manage resources, every time you can't play the game you want at a decent framerate at the settings that please you. This is the reason we have each year new better hardware available, and each 1-3 years most of the users will be putting some money for upgrades, as they have yet demands unanswered.

We are slowly coming up to a point where there is no need to replace/upgrade hardware constantly. Someone than wants to do light tasks can buy a system and use it for many years without worrying about new computer hardware. Offices and business that need computers for their practices can keep them for a decade and be fully functional. And gamers that play at 1080p 60hz have been achieving the intended experience these last couple of years leaving them without the need of buying new parts. They stay at that resolution either because they refuse to pay over $200 for a display (or VR headset), or because those products aren't available at a reasonable price on their region (cheapest 1440p monitor I can found in my country is over $500USD). Which comes to my argument on my previous post, I think that if we get 4k as a mainstream monitor standard, when anyone can get for $200ish a decent 2160p display, we will see hardware as well as software quickly catching up. The same goes for high refresh rates and VR.
