I mean banning won't even be like super hard since you need (or at least needed) an API key to use the trade system. So as long as they monitor the usage of keys (again, seriously not a big deal) then those gambling sites are screwed.

 

@Edit:

Realised some of you think that you can "hide" your api access behind another site. You can't. It just require some steam eployee to have couple of skins, log into web, bet them and check the api usage history within last minute. Guess whose api it will be. ;)

Depending on the rarity of the skin their value was defined by community and in some super rare cases a single knife skin can cost $3000.

 

People gamble with skins worth $300-500 like it's nothing.

 

Big twitch streamers gamble away $5000-10000 in a single round several times a day.

 

And these gambling sites take percentage on each win. Which makes sense. There is so many of them that this "business" is worth Billions ! Just because community values pixels in a game so much....

 

Many of the gamblers are underage kids who saw a YouTube video or twitch streamer win a lot of money so they get hyped.

 

Some people (legal age) make living on CSGO skins. They can earn (by selling skins on OPskins website) well over minimum wage if they know what they are doing.

 

Lot of money is involved in this. If sites can't trade skins with users the sites are dead. This should affect skins cost a lot.

 

Betting on CSGO matches or any sport match with CSGO skins is a big thing too.

 

But I don't know how big the impact will be and how the sites are going to work around it.

well it would be worse if the federal govt decided that valve were in the wrong and force them to close it all down imagine you inventories worth if you cant trade at all..

I dont know of any laws but the "gate" is usually if they have a credit card or bank account. but thanks to things like skins or virtual/online currency like BTC it has changed how/who can spend "money" online. It is far less regulated now so I think laws may need to catch up with these issues.

yes but its was not that common in the past and I think most places its 16 to get a credit card (not sure). but now more and more kids have access to credit cards, online payment services, virtual currency's. you use to be able to use that as a age identifier wall.

There is a difference between credit and debit cards. In the UK, you can have a debit card at 12, but as credit cards are effectively borrowing money, you need to be 18.

You could argue that, which again is another gray area. With virtual goods so ingrained into so many games, it's almost impossible to win any case if it was taken to court.

 

As long as they have parental approval, I believe they can.  With gambling, whether you have parental approval or not, you still can't do it.

I'm pretty sure valve will leave those sites alone as they aren't the source of this problem, they are probably only focusing on sites that are ment for gambling or have gambling features.  They may go after skin cash out sites so that no one can claim that the crate opening system built into cs go is just valves built in form of gambling (people may see keys/skins as betting chips and crates as rolls of the slot machine built into cs go), but I doubt it.  You never know though.  This may be the end of a built up economy, It may not.  Either way, at least the cancer that is Online CS Go gambling is finally going to be surgically removed from the community along with some chemo therapy/ radiation therapy for good measure.

external trading is very useful and can make trades safer with sending your skins you are trading to a middle man and the other person does so also and then when he confirms he got all the items in the trade he sends you your items and the other person his. if the other person tries to scam you the middle man will just send you your items back. and if he still messes up somehow then the middle person is liable and will cover your losses

Typical valve tbh, it takes a huge scandal and law suits before they take any action. This has been going on for a long time and they've ignored it entirely. If I were a judge I'd be asking them why it took this scandal before they acted to stop this activity which they claim is in breach of their license agreement.

honestly i dont know why people love valve so much.

a low hierachy doesnt work well for a company like that, cause no one is really in charge and people just switch to other teams.

you can easily see that with each and every feature they put on steam. how long did it take them to improve the steam reivews? a year or more?

what happened to streaming on steam since it came out? nothing.

curator system? nothing either.  

ok you can argue that broadcasts are just a side feature, but the others are just too important for the store and the consumers.

 

im fine with gambling in general, if its properly regulated, which it isnt atm.

people promoting and gambling on their own site or even literally scamming their own viewers is a whole other story.
