Valve to stop letting gambling sites use OpenID API. Update: RIP CSGO Gambling Sites

So after 2 law suites and the huge drama of CSGO Lotto, Valve decided to start banning sites from accessing the trading system of steam making those sites simply obsolete.

In 2011, we added a feature to Steam that enabled users to trade in-game items as a way to make it easier for people to get the items they wanted in games featuring in-game economies.

Since then a number of gambling sites started leveraging the Steam trading system, and there’s been some false assumptions about our involvement with these sites. We’d like to clarify that we have no business relationships with any of these sites. We have never received any revenue from them. And Steam does not have a system for turning in-game items into real world currency.

These sites have basically pieced together their operations in two-part fashion. First, they are using the OpenID API as a way for users to prove ownership of their Steam accounts and items. Any other information they obtain about a user's Steam account is either manually disclosed by the user or obtained from the user’s Steam Community profile (when the user has chosen to make their profile public). Second, they create automated Steam accounts that make the same web calls as individual Steam users.

Using the OpenID API and making the same web calls as Steam users to run a gambling business is not allowed by our API nor our user agreements. We are going to start sending notices to these sites requesting they cease operations through Steam, and further pursue the matter as necessary. Users should probably consider this information as they manage their in-game item inventory and trade activity.

I think this is the bare minimum they can as these sites started to spread like wild fire with no one regulating  them what so ever, like few said: hope we can see actual csgo gameplay now on twitch instead of gambling all the time.

Update: Valve issues Cease & Desist letter to most big csgo gambling sites stating if they don't stop using steam accounts "Bots" that are used for trading skins in the next 10 days it well ban all steam account.

Well yeah they got sued didn't they, whether the money in the suit matters or not valve essentially lives off good PR so bad PR is something they will avoid like the plague.

Honestly I'm not sure I see the big deal. But then again, I don't really care about the trading system that Steam has. But it seems a lot of people do so idk.

I wouldn't worry about them, these aren't the sort of people who live life without a backup plan. This business has been under the magnifying glass for the past two weeks, and that's ample time for them to come up with an even scummier way to get children to visit profitable websites.

 

In all seriousness, backlash amounting to what exactly? Let them kick and scream on social media all they want if they're going to.

I'm fine with Valve finally cracking down on these sites. Then again, I'm of the mindset that skins have no value to me thus wouldn't buy or even gamble for them. So maybe I just don't care.

Oh gambling is still going to happen. People use steam market to sell skins all the time. This will practically do nothing, if anything its just going to cause people to migrate over to steam market and do some other shit.

Hahahah! My friend made a CSGO betting website and he bypassed all this and made it easier and faster. I don't program in HTML but he did things with ajax requests

Yes but to Valve that's alright, because if people are selling skins through steam valve gets their cut of the money and everyone is suddenly happy.

Well, the problem was online gambling is illegal in most US states and underage gambling is illegal throughout the country.  Selling virtual goods is not.

 

You could make the argument that this isn't really gambling, but that's why Valve is getting sued, it's a gray area.

Don't know if troll, or just have no idea what youre talking about, but:

- HTML is not a programming language whatsoever

- Valve is going to ban those sites from using "trade" system. Ie. their "bots" or whatever won't be able to send skins to/from in any way.

 

I mean banning won't even be like super hard since you need (or at least needed) an API key to use the trade system. So as long as they monitor the usage of keys (again, seriously not a big deal) then those gambling sites are screwed.

 

@Edit:

Realised some of you think that you can "hide" your api access behind another site. You can't. It just require some steam eployee to have couple of skins, log into web, bet them and check the api usage history within last minute. Guess whose api key it will be. ;)
