I am happy either way. What are the pros and cons? Prebuilt NAS might be easier, right?

And which 12-20tb drives do I purchase? Cus theres multiple, right? Check au pcpartpicker?

Prebuilt nas is probably easier, but diy can be cheaper, more customizable and faster. UP to you. Look at synology + qnap for

Id look at nas drives like the ironwolf and red plus drives. I'd get the cheaper of those two. There can be refurb drives for much cheaper, but probably not worth the risk

Hi there, new here.

Looking for advice for setting up a NAS with RAID1 and a lot of storage. Budget is around $2000 AUD. My purpose is to have local storage of LAN games and other legally torrented data that I already own. Advice for VPNs is a must to, but for now I am tossing up between NordVPN, PIA, and Proton. Proton has been proven to cave into governmental demands, though.

I have a Windows Gaming Rig with about 2tb of space on SSDs but thats dedicated to gaming/video editing.
I will soon have a Thinkpad (refurbished) that set me back about 500AUD (so im not sure even which is the model that I bought). It will run Debian (or something else if suggested) as a torrentbox + programming devbox.
I have a smart TV and a smart phone.

What I want is to hoard important data in the case of a doomsday scenario (yes I know, very unlikely, but thats my OCD) such as many ebooks and also for entertainment purposes for after the nuclear fallout (or whatever). I have found a few videos on the topic on YouTube and advice on /g/ that have explained for my purposes a NAS with RAID1 is suitable for my needs. Do you (as a collective) also believe this is the case?

And as for implementation, I dont know where to start. I was thinking Au PCPARTPICKER yet... I have no idea which drives to choose. Id rather spend more, than less, but of course bang-for-buck is the goal. Must I do away with the stock ISP router for a NAS?

Any thoughts?

How much storage do you want? Thats the biggest factor with what drive config to go for.

Normally I'd try to keep games on the local systems. Addin a ssd to a gaming PC is normally a lot better than running it off a nas.

Nope, any router will work fine for a nas with a setup like this.

Do you have multiple systems using this NAS?

How much storage? As much as that 2000$ can get me.

Arent ISP routers renowned for being anti-privacy?

Multiple systems using this storage? Yes. Linux thinkpad + Gaming Windows Machine + Smart TV + Smart Phone? Not sure whats possible but it would be good if my smart phone could access ebooks on the NAS somehow

The LAN Games are low megabytes cus theyre older games, so included in this setup is USB flash drive sticks for transferring these games or ebooks or other media between physical machines.

The purpose is not to store LAN games but to store anything useful in the event of an apocalypse

Then you probably don't want raid 1 as raid 1 really only makes sense with 2 drives. Probably go raid 5/6 here. Get some 12-20TB drives.

Do you want a diy or prebuilt nas?

They already have access to all your internet traffic. The router isn't telling them much more normally. I normally like using my own router as there better, but up to you.
