CPU upgrade og GPU?

Hey guys! So my problem is.... I was planning on buy a gtx 1070 for my rig, but after watching benchmark videos it seems like my CPU would be bottlenecking the gtx 1070 so i dont really know what to do?

I have around 600 bucks to do something with. a GTX 1070 would cost around that, I currently have a GTX 960 gaming 2g.

So I was wondering if I should get an GPU upgrade or not?

problem with the CPU stuff is being, I have a Z97 pc-mate, which seems not to support the i5-6000 series.... And I also want to keep my 16 GB DDR3 ram.... is there any motherboard which supports DDR3 and also the 6k series? :l Or if i do need to buy a new motherboard, which would be best and cheapest?

that won't bottleneck the 1070.  Buy a 1070, plug it in, and you're good to go.

Mhhh but another post regarding i5-4460 + 1070 proved that it would bottleneck the 1070

You'll only have an issue in extreme cases where a game is very demanding. I would worry too much about it. Run the 1070 and update the CPU later.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

What post was this?  That CPU will not bottleneck that GPU.

"Is the i5 4460 enough for the gtx 1070 to play any game without bottlenecking too much?" around 13 posts before mine under graphics.

It won't bottleneck.  The 4460 is more than enough to push the 1070.

Mhhhh yea okay, and i guess the upgrade from a gtx 960 with 2gb vram to 1070, would still be greater improvement than a new motherboard + a 6k series cpu?

Yes. Stick to your current platform a little longer. Consider a CPU upgrade only after you have the 1070 and a 1440p monitor to boot (as well as a nice set of peripherals).

uhh

the GTX 1070 is close to (if not more than) the GTX 980ti. The i5-4460 does bottleneck the 980ti in games where the CPU is very important. It will bottleneck the GTX 1070 in more than a few circumstances.

BUT! It's still better to upgrade GPU now and CPU later, since you'll get a big performance bump from getting a new GPU, rather than a small one from getting a new CPU. So, OP, I would get the 1070 even though it'll bottleneck in some games.

I used to be quite active here.

For gaming? HELL YES.  The increase in performance from a Haswell i5 to a Skylake i5 isn't enough for you to even notice a difference.

Hmmm, would it be good to overclock it then, or just keep it as it is? Or would I get performance decrease?

Would a i7-4790k be a viable upgrade or?

It would be, just be sure that you get a z97 board if you want to overclock.

A 4790k is a beast of a CPU, only thing you need to know is they run hot. Very hot. I have mine undervolted to manage heat, and I run a H105. But I've never run out of CPU in anything I do.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

So u suggest me, when I get a 4790k later, I should also replace my stock cpu cooler?

That's a requirement. Even if it's just a inexpensive replacement air cooler. I have my 4790k under stock voltage but my daily overclock is 4.6GHz. Worst temp I see using the H105 is mid 60c. Gaming I'm usually in the 50s. I can up the voltage and the clock speed but that ramps the temps up into the 70s real quick like. I go for the best temps/performance.

But I love my 4790k, best CPU I've ever owned.

Currently I have a BloodFreezer 510LC liquid cooler, would that be enough or? And what about the psu? 650W good or?

Yeah that's fine. Even with both the 4790k and 1070 overclocked you'll be fine. What brand of PSU, model?

It would still be good to overclock the 1070, yes. Then, your next upgrade should be CPU. You already have a Haswell i5, so you could swap it for a better Haswell i5 or even jump to an i7 without changing motherboard.

Yeah, haswell i5 should still hold its own with the 1070.  Even if you bottleneck in some very cpu heavy scenarios, you'll see a lot more out of your money than if you were to try to rebuild on skylake.
