Cheap Reliable Solution for Power Source?

Hey guys. I need to do some experimentation for a school project involving a router. In order to do this, I plan to go out into a field with my router in order to do testing in order to minimize interference, however, the dilemma I'm facing is how to power my router while in the field. The router I have is an ASUS RT-AC68U. I'm looking for a solution which is relatively cheap and able to provide a source of power that won't kill my router. I know that there's gas-powered generators out there, but I think that seems a bit overkill for what I'm doing, and I've heard that the power they provide isn't that clean.

 

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

A solar panel like look had or a Lipo battery. Lipos are super light weight and will make a router last days. I would look into the solar panels though. They are enough to charge your phone so enough for a router

If the router runs on a 12V adapter, use a 12V car/RC battery and it should run everything fine.

I've thought about this solution, but the problem would be getting the car onto the field. You see - I plan to do this in a community park, so I can't really drive the car into the middle of the field unfortunately...

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Most of them run at 5V, so I don't think I'll be able to use them. Even if I did find a solar panel that ran at 19V, I have no idea how I would plug it into my router without killing it. I think the ideal solution would be to have a source of power with a regular wall outlet so that I can use the transformer that came with the router.

 

I should also note, according to ASUS' website, the router takes an AC input of 110V~240V(50-60Hz) and outputs DC at 19V with a max current of 1.75A. Doing some simple math, that's a theoretical max power draw of 33.25W, which is nowhere near what those solar panels Luke tested can provide.

I'll definitely look into that. I'd also like to confirm, the 19V output on the battery is 3.5A, but my router only takes 1.75A max. I'm guessing that my router will only draw the power it needs, so even though the battery can provide 3.5A, it'll only give that much current if the device actually needs it, correct?

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

This, And if you have a 12v cordless drill battery you are set. You could sacrifice the AC adapter and  cut the lead from it and connect to the battery. If you don't want to cut your adapter, pick up anotjer at the thrift store.

According to the Asus specifications page for that router ( ASUS RT-AC68U ) , it's powered by a 19v 1.75A adapter, which means it needs a maximum of 33 watts. My guess is that the actual power consumption of the router is much smaller but the power adapter is oversized because from this adapter there's also the 5v for those USB 3 ports generated (about 10 watts), so if you don't use all those network ports and those usb 3 connectors (with power hungry devices), you can estimate much lower power consumption.

 

The DC in jack should be universal, standardized, so you could buy a jack separately and connect wires to them and power the router from a separate power supply. Alternatively, if you're good with soldering iron, you could just solder two wires on the back of the pcb by the "DC In" connector.

 

You can find dc-dc converters that can boost lower voltages to higher voltages, so you can buy such a boost regulator ( also called "step-up") and configure it to output 19v.  eBay is full of such devices, or you can buy something from a reputable online distributor of electronic components. 

 

Here's an example of such a step up converter, here's another one and here's yet another one ... and there's plenty more out there. 

 

The closer you are to the 19v voltage the router wants, the more efficient such a boost regulator would be, so it's in your best interest to go with something like 8 rechargeable batteries ( 8 x 1.2 - 1.35v = 9.5-11v) or two lithium batteries in series (3.7-4.2v x 2) or custom lithium batteries with default voltage of 8.4..11.5v

 

The easiest would be to use a plain 12v motorbike / car battery which will have voltages varying between about 8v and 13v when full, and your dc-dc converter will boost this lover voltage to the amount needed. A full car battery should keep your router happy for a few hours, I think more than 10-16 hours. Downside is that it's heavy and takes long time to recharge

 

Otherwise, you can buy lithium batteries with huge capacities, from sites like Hobbyking, for example buy one that's rated for 8v-11v and these should keep your router running for days, depending on the total capacity. The problem with these custom lithium batteries would be that you'd need a particular charger capable of charging such batteries with higher default voltage.

Alternatively, you could just connect eight AA rechargeable batteries in series, or type C or D type rechargeable batteries  for bigger energy capacity... though for AA batteries you'll find battery holders and you could replace them easily in the field with other rechargeable batteries and ni-mh battery chargers are easy to find and use and you can buy 100 aa batteries and recharge them all over night if you want to.

 

Really before making any decision, you should use a clamp meter or some other kind of power meter to measure the actual average power consumption of your router and base your decisions on that.

How long does the router have to run in one go ?

A bank of 5x  18650 Li-ion batteries in series should be able to deliver about 19V @ 1.75A for at least an hour, probably more as the router will probably draw less then the stated current and 18650 batteries can be had upto 3Ah from respected vendors such as sanyo.

 

These batteries, battery sockets and chargers are relatively cheap on ebay for example.

Easiest and safest way would just be to use a 12VDC to 110VAC inverter with a 12V automotive battery.
