Hey

So i was just doing some research for homework, and I came across this article about spotting if your child is a hacker. Whilst reading it I read the following passage:

"If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking.AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well. "

I was not sure if i should be shocked, surprised or angry. Any thoughts? And I just wanted to  double check I'm not the uninformed one... Really i just wanted to share it for all to see..

ps.

I'm not trying to start an Intel vs AMD, so don't start it.

LOL. I remember seeing this a long time ago. I think it was written by some computer illiterate parent, but I dont remember the circumstances that made them write it since it was so long ago.

This is a old piece of satire. Everyone knows about it.

Was it satire or a parent who didn't understand what their kid was doing? It's been so long that I don't remember.

Based solely on their knowledge and manipulation of certain facts, it's most certainly satire.

It's written in such a way that it's applicable to practically everybody.

i dont think this news site is legit. look at this poll.

I dont mean to generalize here but some older people are unsettled with the rapid changes in technology and trying to almost find someone to blame to qualm their worries. I was talking to my grandpa who that he was super tech savvy and he thought that skylake processors were becoming unsupported later this year. I let him use my laptop a bit and he never used a single keyboard shortcut ever. to close a window he kept going file, options, exit. I told him he could just press control q or press the x in the top right hand corner and he started talking about how technology is advancing so quickly. My grandpa doesnt do anything but play with computers and thats the information hes come up with, think about moms, dads, or grandparents who nothing about computers and there kid asks if they can buy an AMD processor. They might wonder why their kid wants to buy a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of metal for $150 in their eyes. I know when i started getting into computers i thought the same thing but older people might go to sites like that instead of me who asked that question here, on the LTT forums.

Yeah this is satire. As far as the basis for this goes, there was a time when AMD did actually make clones of Intel chips.

AMD used to make (like back in the 233Mhz / pentium days) clone CPUs as did another company called cyrix. They soon moved into making their own motherboards and platforms but for a time they were cloning Intel. Out the back of the legal spat between the two companies came an agreement to share certain key underlying patents and to both be able to continue to develop x86, but as an article it isn't completely untrue its just definitely not true anymore.
