Hey off-topic. 

 

Doing some one inorganic chemistry and there is a certain question I cannot get my head around. 

Do any of you guys know how to get stoichiometric factors of half (reactants half) of a redox equation. Something like this;

Any guides to this technique? I'm having trouble finding any.

This is very hard to read but I I know how to do it but the cryptic writing is very hard to read. Just look at this

Thanks man, Khan academy is a god send. The actual had equation parts are OK, it was more the Va x Ea = Vb x Eb that really have me going crazy. It's a technique that our lecturer used and I cannot seem to get any more info on it.

You have to find the least common multiple of the electron coefficients of both the half equations.

This technique was given to us to get the concentration of a reactant in a redox titration. Possibly not every day, but certainly useful. And is training to think! :P

I think that putting things with maths concepts rather than physics /chemistry is sometimes  (quite often actually) really useful. It's like how quantum physics are basically linear algebra but with complex words and lot a memorization :)

Well it depends on the country I guess, in France it's harder than in the US for instance, but there, people are seen as good only if they have a doctorate which is sad, since the academic level of a PhD holder is pretty close to the one you have with a master's degree.

Yes it does seem that way, that more and more is needed. As interesting as PhDs are, they can be difficult to justify cost wise at times.

Basically when you have your masters degree you have more than 95% of your total knowledge covered, and you learn method skills more than scientific skills. It's like that in Europe at least. Maybe it isn't in the US and that's why they do it like that, I don't really know :)

True certainly an excellent position to be in! But it's the Extra "new" learning of the PhD that makes it interesting to me, edging forward, bit by bit. Nor do I to be honest. I'm just happy that the prices on Europe are still very reasonable :P

I can tell you the pH of a buffer solution, calculate the lattice enthalpies of formation and complete a redox titration but I can't do this shit.

 

Turns out that 5 year old A-Level Chemistry isn't that much of a help after all. It was all about drawing hexagons with circles inside them anyway.
