Change the volume keys to affect the active program

I find the volume keys on my keyboard completely useless. If I want to change the overall volume it's easier for me to just change it with my headphones, so I don't use those at all.

However, they would be really useful if they changed just the active program. Sometimes a certain application is too low or a game is too high, so I'd very much enjoy being able to easily adjust the sound without messing with the volume mixer or having to go to the in-game options. This is especially useful if I'm just playing a flash game, which are usually much louder than youtube videos, and I know I'll have to bring the sound back up after I'm done playing it.

So, does anyone know about any software that can do this? I tried searching for it but just couldn't find anything.

Why exactly? I don't see any reason for it to not be possible, there are a lot of program out there that allow me to change what a key does, I just need one that allows me to alter the sound as well.

There are plenty of programs which will let you assign keys to volume, but that is locked to the over-all system volume.

You basically want the mixer sound functionality in one button depending on which application is active.

There isn't such a program.

Such functionality has to be possible. The volumes in the mixer have to be stored somewhere, and the moment they're stored then it has to be hackable. I guess I'll have to go look for it and create a script myself.
